Summary of This Score

Piano Pieces Op. 119 gathers the last cycle for solo piano composed by Johannes Brahms, written during the summer of 1893 in Bad Ischl. These late pages condense the composer's full maturity: an inner polyphony, sometimes bold harmonic colors, and a poetry of the moment where every breath counts. Brahms himself speaks, regarding the first piece, of a writing "full of dissonances" and a way of making time sing, as if the music must extract a deep melancholy from its harmonic friction.

However, this collection offers much more than a single mood: throughout the four pieces, the pianist traverses varied characters, from intimacy to momentum, with a subtle balance between singing line and chordal texture. The third piece surprises with a lighter luminosity, while the last asserts a freer temperament, almost rhapsodic. Altogether, it constitutes a prime choice to enrich one's Romantic repertoire, working on sonority, layers, agogics, and musical narration.

This publication offers a revised Urtext edition, edited by Katrin Eich, with fingerings by Andreas Boyde. A valuable reference for pianists wishing to rediscover a complex, nuanced, and deeply human Brahms, with a musically rigorous text and a presentation suited for daily practice.
