Summary of This Score
At a time when piano four-hands was still an exceptional practice, Joseph Haydn composed a "Divertimento à deux pour clavecin solo" (Hob. XVIIa:1) as mischievous as it is intelligent. The score playfully stages a learning situation: who was the student Haydn had in mind when composing this cheeky music? The question remains, but the intention is clear in the early copies, where "La parte del Maestro" and "dello Scolare" appear instead of "primo" and "secondo."
Haydn's playfulness bursts forth at every moment: the alternating play between "master" and "student" is imitated with irresistible verve, as if the lines passed from one music stand to the other. In the final measures of the variation movement, the hands of the two performers even overlap without musical necessity, a deliberate wink that adds as much to the spectacle as to the joy of playing. This work, presented as Haydn's only piece for four hands, has been republished based on the recently released volume of the complete works edition of Haydn (HN 5501/5502).
