In 1842, during his summer vacation, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy composed "Pieces for Children" in the form of four piano miniatures, written respectively in the albums of two young boys from his family circle. These pages thus originated in a private, spontaneous setting, where conciseness serves expression: just a few measures are enough to establish an atmosphere, a melodic idea, a character.
Years later, Mendelssohn revisited these pieces and revised them. He removed two, then reorganized the remaining pieces in a new order before publishing them under the title "Pieces for Children." The composer died shortly before the publication, which took place in 1848. This score therefore offers a valuable insight into his revision work, balancing freshness of invention and clarity of expression.
