Summary of This Score

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Quintet for Horn in E-flat Major K. 407 (386c)

This quintet owes much to the friendship between Mozart and the horn player Ignaz Leutgeb: the horn part, literally conceived "tailor-made," combines melodic elegance, projection, and agility, while remaining perfectly integrated into the chamber music discourse. The writing highlights the breathing of phrasing, the line development, and dialogues, making it a particularly formative score for classical style, intonation, and balance work.

The accompaniment differs from a traditional string quartet scheme: instead of two violins, Mozart chooses two violas. This choice thickens the middle register, strengthens harmonic roundness, and serves the dark and warm color of the horn, giving the ensemble an immediately recognizable sound. For ensembles, it is an excellent basis for working on timbre blending, dynamics, and unified articulation.

On the editorial level, with the autograph lost, this edition is established from the first edition. The critical apparatus also offers a detailed analysis of secondary sources, allowing a better understanding of some of Mozart's intentions. An ideal score for horn players and chamber musicians seeking a rigorous edition, suitable for rehearsal work as well as performance.
