Summary of This Score

This score highlights one of Maurice Ravel's most delicate piano pages. The first movement, probably written in 1903, is documented as having been performed by the composer on January 8, 1904, during a musical evening at Marguerite de Saint-Marceaux's salon. The composition dates of the other two movements remain uncertain, but the entire work quickly established itself as a major piece of early 20th-century French piano music.

At its premiere in Lyon in 1906, the Sonatine received a very positive reception, while the Parisian audience was initially more reserved. This contrast did not prevent Ravel from strongly promoting the piece: he continued to include it in his own programs, a sign of his particular attachment to this "clearly and almost classically structured" writing.

Both in study and in concert, the Sonatine is an ideal piano score for developing precise and nuanced playing. It encourages attention to the clarity of sonic layers, the quality of touch, and the elegance of rubato, while respecting the formal rigor desired by Ravel. An excellent choice to enrich a recital program and deepen the style of French music, balancing clarity, equilibrium, and refinement.
