This sonata for violin, conceived between summer and autumn 1887, is now established as one of Richard Strauss's most popular chamber music compositions. It captivates as much by its romantic breadth as by the richness of its harmonic language, notably thanks to a particularly developed modulation technique.
In the first and last movements, the piano part occupies a decisive role: its generous writing and ensemble effects sometimes burst the intimate character usually associated with chamber music.
