Considered today as one of the great keyboard composers in the history of music, Domenico Scarlatti is also the very first keyboard virtuoso. The selection presented here includes 24 sonatas from different creative periods, offering a global vision of the multiple facets of the talent of this Italian composer who worked at the Spanish court.
Thanks to his characteristic themes, naturally singing melodies, and dancing motifs, Scarlatti manages to transcend any form of Baroque heaviness. In these single-movement sonatas, playing technique becomes a formal structuring element. For the first time in the history of the keyboard repertoire, the performer must master large leaps and hand crossings. The preface by the great pianist Bengt Johnsson reviews Scarlatti's career and the various sources on which our edition is based. Some sonatas appear here for the first time in printed form. As a small extra gift, an original preface initially published in a 1738 edition as a preamble to 30 keyboard sonatas by Scarlatti is reproduced here, providing many useful insights for understanding Scarlatti's keyboard music.
