In the summer of 1891, Alexander Scriabin injured his right hand due to overwork. Forced to play only with his left hand, he turned this limitation into a true pianistic exploration and composed in 1894 the Prelude and Nocturne op. 9, two complementary pieces that highlight the expressive richness of the left hand alone. Published in 1895, they quickly established themselves as a reference: the Prelude sets a concentrated and intense atmosphere, while the Nocturne unfolds a singing line and refined harmonic writing, typical of Scriabin's language. These pages are as valuable for study (balance between melody and accompaniment, wrist flexibility, pedal management) as for performance, thanks to their power of color and narration. Their success quickly crossed borders: in 1906, Scriabin reported from New York that his Nocturne for the left hand was selling "by the thousands," a sign of already immense popularity.
