Summary of This Score

"Methodical Sonatas for Flute or Violin and Basso Continuo, Volume II" brings together six sonatas by Georg Philipp Telemann, published in 1732 and called "methodical" according to the usage of the time. Their particularity is as simple as it is useful for the performer: in the first slow movements (and in the second movement of the C minor sonata), the original melodic line is accompanied by an ornamented variant. This side-by-side presentation allows a concrete understanding of the art of Baroque ornamentation, refining rhetoric, breathing, and phrasing, while maintaining a clear and immediately usable musical framework.

Designed for the flute or violin with basso continuo, this new Henle-Urtext edition stands out for its musicological rigor and presentation conceived for playing. It offers a score with a realized bass "according to the rules of the art," ideal for working with a harpsichordist, organist, or any accompanist seeking a ready-to-use realization. To adapt to different contexts (lessons, rehearsals, concerts), the edition also includes separate parts for solo and basso continuo, in which the other voice remains visible to guide the performer in balance, entrances, and listening.

Finally, an additional part containing only the figured bass allows continuo players to realize the harmony themselves, encouraging a freer and stylistically informed approach. Following the first volume of Methodical Sonatas (HN 1266), this Volume II completes the availability of the twelve Telemann sonatas in Henle-Urtext edition, a reference choice for musicians seeking rigor, pedagogy, and musicality.
