A Clever Alternative to Richter Diatonics in the Hohner Range

Alongside classic "Richter" diatonic harmonicas, Hohner develops special models dedicated to specific playing approaches. The Penta Harp fits this philosophy: offering a diatonic harmonica oriented towards rock and blues, with a note arrangement that emphasizes musical efficiency. The idea is simple: to facilitate access to blues-typical sounds while keeping an instrument compact, straightforward, and pleasant to handle.

Who Is It For, and What Styles?

The Hohner Penta Harp is primarily aimed at beginners and intermediate players who want to improvise quickly with convincing results. Its layout based on the blues scale (minor pentatonic enriched with the "blue note") makes it particularly comfortable for blues, rock, and pop, whether for riffs, vocal responses, or simple but effective solos. It is also an excellent choice for those who want to play "by ear" with maximum melodic safety.

Sound and Design

Designed as a 10-hole diatonic, the Penta Harp focuses on easy sound production and intuitive reading of notes useful in blues. The result: a naturally "blues"-oriented tone, with note sequences that fall well under blow and draw, enabling quick construction of expressive melodies. Its plastic body contributes to playing comfort and stability, while offering a pleasant mouthfeel appreciated during long sessions.

Diatonic or Chromatic

A diatonic harmonica is designed around a key and facilitates access to chords by blowing and drawing, while allowing typical expressive effects (notably through reed interaction). In contrast, a chromatic harmonica aims to access all notes, often via a dedicated system. The Hohner Penta Harp is indeed a diatonic harmonica, here optimized to make the blues scale particularly simple and musical to exploit.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To preserve reed response and instrument longevity, a soft cloth and regular cleaning (wiping the exterior, drying after playing) are recommended. If you already have a universal case for 10-hole harmonicas, it will generally fit the format, but exact compatibility depends on the case dimensions.
