An Icon of the Marine Band Range, at the Heart of HOHNER History

The HOHNER Marine Band 1896 is one of those instruments that have shaped popular music culture. Produced since the late 19th century, it has become a benchmark for its traditional tuning and characteristic construction, featuring a wooden comb and side-vented covers. Long favored for its accessibility and effectiveness, it has established itself as a must-have in the world of diatonic harmonicas, embodying much of the sonic aesthetic of traditional blues on its own.

For Which Musicians and Styles?

This Marine Band is aimed at motivated beginners as well as intermediate and advanced harmonica players seeking a true sonic identity. Its 10-hole diatonic format facilitates learning chords, rhythmic playing, and distinctive melodic phrases, while opening the door to expressive techniques like bending. It excels in blues but is also well suited for folk, country, roots rock, and pop whenever a lively and organic sound is desired.

Sound and Design

The Marine Band 1896 emphasizes a balance between warmth and character. Its pearwood body contributes to a natural playing feel and a woody tone, while the 0.9-millimeter brass reeds provide a clear response and good presence. The curved stainless steel covers with side vents help deliver a more open projection and broad sound dispersion, appreciated in acoustic settings. The lacquered pearwood mouthpiece preserves the classic spirit of the model, with a vintage-style touch.

Diatonic or Chromatic?

A diatonic harmonica is designed around a main key: it facilitates chord playing and phrasing, and allows access to certain missing notes through bending, a blues hallmark. Conversely, a chromatic harmonica provides all notes via a dedicated mechanism, making it very versatile for jazz and classical music. This model is indeed a diatonic harmonica, in B key (B/Si), with traditional HOHNER layout.
