Marine Band: A Hohner Legend, Between Tradition and Evolution

Alongside the standard Richter harmonicas, Hohner has long developed models designed for specific styles and techniques. In this context, the Marine Band series holds a special place: renowned for its wooden comb and "sandwich" construction, it has established itself as a historic reference, especially in blues and roots genres. The Marine Band Deluxe retains the DNA of the famous Marine Band 1896 while adding concrete manufacturing and ergonomic improvements to meet the expectations of today's musicians without sacrificing the traditional sound personality.

For Which Musician and Styles?

The Hohner Marine Band Deluxe is primarily aimed at intermediate to professional musicians seeking a diatonic harmonica with a strong character and excellent responsiveness for bends. It is particularly comfortable in blues, Chicago blues, rock, folk, country, and pop, wherever a lively sound, clear attacks, and natural expressiveness are desired. Thanks to the Richter tuning and optimized sealing, the instrument facilitates nuances (from soft playing to very projected playing) and highlights techniques such as bends and hand effects.

Sound and Design

Designed for projection, the Marine Band Deluxe combines fast response with rich harmonic density: the timbre remains rich and distinctive, with precise attack and good stability when pushed hard. The 0.9 mm brass reeds contribute to power and presence, while the stainless steel screw-on covers add robustness and comfort in hand. The varnished pearwood comb (brown, light lacquer) is finished to limit moisture absorption, improve sealing, and maintain a pleasant playing feel. The SuperGlide lacquered mouthpiece coating provides a smoother glide, appreciated during long sessions.

Diatonic or Chromatic

A diatonic harmonica is centered on one key and emphasizes chords and expressiveness: it offers a layout (here Richter ) that makes blow/draw playing natural and allows bends on certain notes to achieve "bluesy" colors and complete missing notes. A chromatic harmonica, on the other hand, provides access to all notes via a mechanism (often a slide), for a more "all keys" approach and great versatility in jazz or classical music. The Hohner Marine Band Deluxe is indeed a diatonic, designed for phrasing, tone, and nuances.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To preserve the finish and mouthpiece comfort, a microfiber cloth (to wipe covers and mouthpiece after playing) is an excellent complement. For transport, the instrument already comes with a practical rigid neoprene case for everyday use.
