Hohner Comet: a "special" alternative to Richter diatonics

In addition to the standard Richter diatonic harmonicas, Hohner has long developed models designed for specific techniques and tonal colors. The Comet series fits this logic: a two-voice harmonica with doubled holes to achieve a fuller and more expressive sound. This design highlights a very distinctive sonic identity, particularly appreciated in certain traditional music styles.

Who is this harmonica for and in which styles?

The Hohner Comet primarily targets the intermediate to advanced player seeking a distinctive sound, different from a classic blues diatonic. The octave tuning is especially suited for folk music and melodic repertoires where an immediate, full, and "singing" sound presence is desired. In the key of C, it is well suited for learning themes, traditional tunes, and group playing (events, ensembles, popular music).

Sound and Design

An octave harmonica is distinguished by its tuning principle: the reeds in the same column are tuned with an octave interval. The result: a broader, fuller sound that stands out clearly in the mix, ideal for carrying a melody effortlessly. The Comet series adds real attention to comfort thanks to a mouthpiece with rounded channels, which facilitates sound production and improves the feel in the mouth during fast transitions.

Regarding construction, the red plastic body provides stability and easy maintenance, while the anodized aluminum covers offer an elegant and robust finish. The 0.9-millimeter brass plates contribute to a crisp response and good projection, delivering a clear attack and a consistent tone across the instrument.

Diatonic or Chromatic

Generally, the diatonic harmonica (focused on one key, very common in blues/folk and "Richter" playing) and the chromatic harmonica (all notes available via a mechanism, more versatile in jazz/classical) are distinguished. The Hohner Comet is a two-voice diatonic model, designed here for the octave effect thanks to the doubling of holes and specific tuning.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To protect your instrument daily, a universal harmonica case compatible with a length of about 16 cm is a practical option. A soft cloth is also useful for wiping the exterior after playing to preserve the look of the anodized covers.
