What is iZotope VocalSynth 2 for?
iZotope VocalSynth 2 is a vocal effect plugin designed to craft modern vocals and create sung textures impossible to achieve with traditional processing. It targets electro, pop, hip-hop, and RnB producers as well as sound designers, enabling robotic voices, synthetic harmonies, talkbox effects, grainy lo-fi digital timbres, or thick and perfectly controlled vocal layers.
Whether you want to transform a vocal take into a futuristic lead, thicken a chorus with harmonized doubles, or generate a keyboard-controlled "instrument" voice, VocalSynth 2 integrates easily into production and mixing workflows, suitable for lead vocals, backing vocals, ad-libs, or even instrumental sources (synths, guitars, drums) for creative resynthesis effects.
Main Features
5 vocal effects ranging from subtle correction to complete redesign
The core of VocalSynth 2 is based on five complementary modules. Biovox offers a more "organic" approach to vocal processing, ideal for adding character without losing intelligibility. Vocoder merges voice and carrier signal to produce iconic sounds (vocoder pads, electro leads). Polyvox generates stacks and polyphonic textures to instantly thicken a vocal line. Compuvox delivers a distinctly digital color, perfect for glitch, chip, or retro-futuristic aesthetics. Finally, Talkbox recreates the spirit of classic talkbox effects, with pronounced articulation and a very musical output.
Additional effects section for an immediate sonic signature
Beyond the vocal engine, VocalSynth 2 includes an effects section to finalize the sound directly within the plugin. The Chorus widens and thickens the stereo image, the Ring Mod adds metallic harmonics, Distortion enhances aggressiveness and presence, and the Filter facilitates mix placement by shaping frequencies. Speaker simulations provide a "re-amping" color useful for a more credible or lo-fi rendering, while Shred and Delay open the door to rhythmic textures, cuts, and creative repetitions.
Built-in real-time pitch correction
The integrated pitch correction allows you to lock intonation in real time and make processing more stable, especially on vocoders, harmonizations, or polyphonic textures. This is an asset for achieving a cleaner result in fast production or, conversely, emphasizing the "tuning" aesthetic when seeking a modern and bold color.
Auto, MIDI, and Sidechain modes: musical and flexible control
With its different control modes, VocalSynth 2 adapts to various scenarios. The Auto mode suits quick processing and instant effects. The MIDI mode turns the plugin into a playable instrument, handy for playing vocal chords, creating harmonized lines, or precisely controlling pitch. The Sidechain mode offers control from another track, useful for triggering or modulating the effect from a dedicated source and achieving more complex rhythmic interactions.
"Plugin-spanning" integration with the iZotope ecosystem
VocalSynth 2 supports inter-plugin communication features, allowing integration with Neutron 2 Visual Mixer, Masking Meter, and Tonal Balance Control. This approach facilitates mixing decisions by helping visualize and adjust the overall balance, the placement of vocals in the mix, and frequency interactions with the rest of the arrangement.

Questions frequently asked
What vocal effects are included in iZotope VocalSynth 2?
The five modules Biovox, Vocoder, Polyvox, Compuvox, and Talkbox cover organic processing, polyphonic harmonies, and digital textures. A dedicated section also features Chorus, Ring Mod, Distortion, Filter, cabinet simulations, Shred, and Delay.
Can vocal harmonies be controlled via a MIDI keyboard?
The MIDI mode allows playing vocal chords and precise control of pitch processing. Auto and Sidechain modes are also available for other control methods.
Is pitch correction integrated?
Real-time pitch correction is included to lock intonation and stabilize vocoders or polyphonic textures.
Is VocalSynth 2 compatible with Windows and Mac?
Windows compatibility is announced from Windows 7 64-bit with the latest Service Pack. On Mac, a 64-bit system starting from macOS 10.8.5 is required. The software is available for download.
How does software activation work?
Authorization is done online or via an iLok 2 or iLok 3 key. Two simultaneous activations are allowed.
