A "Golden Boy" Focused on the Essentials, in a Pedalboard-Friendly Format
Designed with Joey Landreth, the Golden Boy Mini retains the DNA of the original Golden Boy in a more compact version. The idea is simple: keep the sound and the most used settings, while simplifying the architecture (without microcontroller functions) for immediate usability and easy integration into any setup. The result: a premium overdrive focused on touch and harmonics, fitting into the tradition of modern "boutique" drives while remaining ultra-musical.
For Whom, Which Styles, and In What Contexts?
The Jackson Audio Golden Boy Mini is aimed at guitarists who want a transparent overdrive pedal capable of complementing the picking hand rather than masking it. It suits both intermediate players (simple and effective controls) and demanding musicians looking for a responsive drive foundation to stack other saturations.
Its natural playgrounds: blues, rock, roots, country, pop, indie, and anything requiring lively dynamics (fingerpicking, pick playing, slide). In the studio, it excels at "grounding" a take by adding body without altering the guitar's character. Live, its mini format and 3-band EQ allow quick adaptation to a backline amp or a tricky room acoustic.
Controls, Modes, and Design: Simple, Yet Flexible
The controls are straightforward: Volume for output level, Gain for drive amount, and a 3-band equalizer (Bass, Middle, Treble) of the Baxandall type, particularly effective for adjusting low-end breadth, midrange bite, and treble openness without resorting to a cold, "surgical" EQ.
A switch allows choosing between two clipping modes: Asym for a "chewy," more compressed, and punchy saturation, and LED for a more open feel, with more headroom and a sharper attack. The pedal operates in true bypass, and its top-mounted jacks format helps save space on tight pedalboards. Inside, additional trim pots allow fine-tuning the overall behavior to match your guitar and amp.
Sound
The Golden Boy Mini aims for a transparent and rich overdrive: it preserves the character of your guitar, pickups, and amp while adding a dense harmonic texture that is very "touch sensitive." At low gain, it acts as a sound thickener, ideal for beefing up a clean tone or pushing an amp already near breakup. When the gain is increased, it shifts to more pronounced textures, with clear chord definition and dynamic response that perfectly follows playing nuances.
In terms of inspiration, it channels the spirit of Bluesbreaker / King of Tone -type overdrives: organic, articulate saturation that loves single-coil guitars as well as humbuckers. Naturally, it is also a coherent choice for capturing the playing aesthetic of Joey Landreth, whose tone often highlights harmonics and attack finesse.

Questions frequently asked
What sound does the Jackson Audio Golden Boy Mini offer?
Its analog circuit aims for a transparent overdrive, retaining the character of the guitar and amp. At low gain, it thickens a clean tone or pushes an amp close to breakup. With more Gain, chords remain clear and the response follows the attack nuances.
What are the ASYM and LED modes?
The ASYM switch provides a more compressed and edgy clipping. The LED mode offers more headroom with a sharper attack.
Does the 3-band EQ allow adapting the pedal to an amp?
The Baxandall Bass, Middle, and Treble EQ allows adjustment of the low end, midrange, and brightness of the highs.
What power supply is needed for this overdrive?
A 9 V DC center-negative power supply is required, with a consumption of 35 mA. Battery operation is not supported.
Does the Golden Boy Mini take up little space on a pedalboard?
With dimensions of 108 x 64 x 59 mm and top-mounted jacks, this format facilitates integration on a compact pedalboard. Both input and output use a 6.35 mm jack.
