A JHS Distortion "From Scratch": The Hard Drive Project

The JHS Hard Drive holds a unique place in the lineup: it is a modern distortion designed without using a classic circuit. The idea originated in 2016 with the goal of covering the best high-gain tones of the 90s and 2000s, then the development took on a new dimension: after studying pedals and amps, JHS chose to start from scratch to achieve a truly unique signature. The project was completed 8 years later, with a pedal designed to go "further and louder" than the brand's previous gains/distortions, while paying tribute to the engineering work that shaped its identity.

Who Is the JHS Hard Drive For?

The Hard Drive is aimed at guitarists who want a versatile high-gain distortion capable of delivering both thick rhythms and leads that cut through the mix. It is particularly comfortable in alternative rock, post-grunge, modern punk, hard rock, and can venture into heavier territories when you tighten the gain and refocus the mids.

In a live context, its efficiency-focused EQ helps the guitar stand out against drums and bass without unnecessarily boosting volume. In studio, it becomes a sculpting tool: you can finely adjust attack, presence, and density, whether you play single-coil pickups (for a sharper bite) or humbuckers (for a wider gain wall). On a pedalboard, it pairs very well with a boost/overdrive placed before it to tighten the low end and push harmonics.

Controls, Equalization, and Design: A Distortion Tailored for the Mix

The JHS Hard Drive adopts a modern approach to distortion in pedal format: cascaded gain stages to build saturation progressively, a hard limiting circuit to control the signal, then a class A/B amplification section feeding an EQ designed to be both musical and extremely practical on stage.

The settings emphasize the mids, where the clarity of a distorted guitar is decided: the Middle knob allows you to scoop or boost, while Mid Freq selects the targeted frequency range (perfect for shifting from a more "scooped" tone to a pronounced midrange like a big lead). The Baxandall-style Bass and Treble controls then let you adjust the low end (palm mutes, drop tunings, precision) and the high end (attack, brightness, edge) without making the sound unnecessarily harsh. Finally, Drive controls the amount of saturation and Volume sets the output level to match your clean tone or push an amp's input.

On the integration side, the buffered bypass and Silent Soft Touch footswitch provide silent and stable operation, especially appreciated when the effects chain grows longer.

The Sound

The Hard Drive delivers a dense, modern distortion rich in harmonics, with a real "wall" feel as gain increases, while maintaining definition for chords and riffs. Depending on the EQ and midrange frequency chosen, you can go from a tight amp-like crunch (sharp attack, tight grain) to a more massive saturation, ideal for post-grunge rhythms and singing leads.

Its strong point is the ability to sit well in a mix : by adjusting Middle and Mid Freq, you instantly adapt the guitar to your amp, pickups, and context (band, studio, low tunings), without losing the high-gain character. The result: an expressive distortion that responds well to right-hand dynamics and can remain clear even when saturation is pushed.
