An "old" boutique recipe, miniaturized for modern pedalboards
The Katana is one of the clean boosts that marked the boutique era: a circuit designed to increase volume without crushing the feel, with that subtle grain and sensation of "pushing the amp" associated with tube input stages. The Katana Mini retains the original design DNA (2002) based on 2 Class A JFETs, while making it more compact and adding real versatility through two internal micro-switches that unlock 4 modes usable as a clean boost, a warmer boost, or a boost approaching overdrive.
Who it's for and what for: from "always-on" to solo boost
The Keeley Katana Mini is aimed both at guitarists who want a transparent and musical clean boost and those seeking a simple preamp to thicken their guitar tone without changing their entire chain. In blues, funk, pop, rock, indie, and even more aggressive contexts, it excels at increasing presence, tightening attack, and letting notes breathe.
On a pedalboard, it fits easily: before an overdrive to push it and gain sustain, or after distortion pedals to raise overall volume (depending on your chain and amp headroom). In the studio, it serves as a clean and quick "leveling" tool; live, it's typically the pedal you engage for a bigger chorus or louder solo without fiddling with settings.

Questions frequently asked
Can the Keeley Katana Mini drive an overdrive or serve as a solo boost?
Placed before an overdrive pedal, it increases the signal level to gain sustain and saturation. After gain effects, it can raise the overall volume depending on the headroom available in the signal chain and the amplifier.
What are the 4 available modes?
Two internal micro-switches provide access to Normal, Hi-Gain, Hi-Cut, and Hi-Gain + Hi-Cut modes. The Hi-Gain adds smooth saturation, while the Hi-Cut attenuates the highs for a warmer tone.
What power supply is required for this pedal?
A 9 V DC center-negative power supply with a 2.1 mm plug is required and not included. The current draw is stated as 0.7 mA.
Is the Katana Mini suitable for a bright Strat or Tele?
The internal Hi-Cut setting, also called Treble Cut, rounds off the high frequencies. This option softens the response of a Strat or Tele paired with a bright amplifier.
What are the dimensions and connectivity of the pedal?
The metal enclosure measures 92 x 47 x 50 mm and weighs 141 g. A 6.35 mm mono TS input and output jack provide connection to an electric guitar rig.
