Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

True to Koch's approach, the Studiotone was designed as a versatile all-tube combo capable of sounding "big" despite its reasonable size. Its DNA clearly draws inspiration from 1960s British amps: responsive dynamics, expressive mids, and EL84 distortion with a singing grain. In the lineup, it stands as a prime tool for guitarists who want a true tube circuit with modern recording-oriented features, without having to switch to a bulkier head + cabinet format.

Who This Amp Is For

The Koch Studiotone targets the intermediate to advanced guitarist seeking a combo capable of covering rehearsals, studio work, and small to medium gigs. Its 20 W Class A power offers an excellent compromise: enough punch to play in a band, while remaining manageable at lower volumes to work on playing nuances and tube response.

It is especially suitable for styles where expressiveness is key: blues, vintage rock, classic rock, pop, funk, and even jazz when a warm and slightly textured clean tone is appreciated. The three channels also allow easy switching between rhythm and lead sounds without relying on a large pedalboard.

Features and Innovations

The Studiotone offers 3 channels (Clean, Overdrive, Overdrive+) with footswitch selection to move from a defined clean to a snappy crunch, then to a more driven and compressed distortion. The EQ and settings are complemented by two particularly effective voicings: the "Mid Shift" (2 positions) emphasizes mids around 800 Hz to stand out better in a mix, while the "Bright" (3 positions) allows softening or opening up the top end depending on the guitar (single coils, humbuckers) and the cabinet.

On the practical side, Koch adds rare functions in this category: a serial effects loop to integrate external delays and reverbs after distortion, a recording output with speaker and mic position simulation, two line outputs (one unfiltered and one low-level), a headphone output, as well as a dedicated output to drive the clean channel of another amp. The speaker On/Off switch is ideal for recording or playing silently through headphones without stressing the combo's speaker.

The Sound

Thanks to its all-tube design (12AX7 preamp, EL84 power tubes) and Class A topology, the Studiotone emphasizes dynamics and touch sensitivity. The Clean channel offers a warm, detailed register with an adjustable top end via the "Bright" control: perfect for clear arpeggios and crisp rhythms without harshness. Increasing the volume yields a natural transition into a slight crunch, very "vintage" in character.

The Overdrive and Overdrive+ channels provide a British-tinged grain: present mids, harmonic saturation, and a natural compression that helps sustain lead notes. The "Mid Shift" is formidable for making the guitar cut through without necessarily increasing volume, while the Accutronics spring reverb adds organic depth, ideal for widening a clean sound or adding air to a crunch. In spirit, this is a combo that prioritizes musicality and playing response over ultra-modern distortion.
