A Skyline that carries the DNA of the legendary 55-94
The Skyline 55-02 Custom follows in the lineage of Lakland basses designed for big stages: a reliable, versatile, and immediately effective instrument. It carries the spirit, neck profile, and sonic architecture that made the USA 55-94 series successful, with a performance-oriented approach: fast response, solid B string, and a "best in class" tonal palette to cover a wide range of registers.
For which bassists and styles?
This 5-string electric bass is particularly aimed at intermediate to advanced bassists seeking a unique instrument for everything: fingerstyle, pick, slap, highly articulated modern lines, or rounder grooves. Its 35" / 889 mm scale length and active electronics make it a natural ally for pop, funk, rock, gospel, fusion, and styles requiring a clear B string that is usable both live and in the studio.
The sound
The 55-02 Custom combines a ash body, known for clarity and definition in the low-mids, with a Lakland MM-J pickup configuration ideal for switching from a broad, muscular tone to sharper, more precise attacks. The active electronics offer an equalizer with cut and boost on bass, midrange, and treble, as well as a blend control to finely balance the pickups according to playing style. The master volume with push-pull (tone control bypass) allows instant access to a more direct and open response. Internal switches also provide mid-frequency boost/cut selection, useful for fitting the bass into the mix without sacrificing presence.

Questions frequently asked
Does the Lakland Skyline 55-02 Custom have a good low B string?
The 35-inch (889 mm) scale length promotes a tight and clear low B string. This setup meets the needs for defined low-end lines in live playing or studio work.
What electronics equip this 5-string bass?
The active Lakland LH3 preamp offers cut/boost controls for bass, midrange, and treble, combined with a pickup blend control. Internal switches allow selecting the mid-frequency range. The push-pull master volume activates a tone control bypass for a more open response.
What sounds do the Lakland MM-J pickups provide?
The Lakland MM-J configuration combines a broad and punchy sound with more precise attacks, depending on the pickup blend setting.
Is the neck suitable for modern 5-string playing?
With a 46 mm nut width, 20.57 mm thickness at the nut, and a compound radius from 254 to 330 mm, this neck is designed for a stable grip. Its 22 frets on a maple fingerboard and profile derived from the 55-94 architecture suit fingerstyle, pick playing, and slap techniques.
What is the finish and wood configuration of this Skyline?
The body is made of ash and receives an Ice Blue Metallic finish. The fingerboard is maple, while Hipshot Ultralite tuners and the Lakland Dual Access bridge complete the hardware.
