A 55-02 Designed as the Gateway to the 55-94 Spirit

The 55-02 adopts the approach that made Lakland famous on major stages: a comfortable feel, carefully spaced strings, and above all, a B string that is both clear and punchy. The LH3 pickups (wound in Lakland's Chicago workshop) and the built-in preamp are the same components as on the legendary USA 55-94, with 9V power supplied via a clip-in battery compartment (convenient, no screws to lose). Internal switches also allow selection of the mid boost/cut frequency. The model is also available in Standard and Deluxe versions.

This 5-string electric bass is aimed at intermediate to advanced bassists who want a reliable, expressive instrument ready for both stage and recording. Thanks to its active electronics, MM-J configuration, and long scale length, it excels in pop, rock, funk, fusion, gospel, and modern contexts where low-end definition and mix presence are priorities.

The Sound

The ash body provides a crisp attack and strong projection, while the quilted maple top adds precision in the upper spectrum, delivering a more "hi-fi" sound when pushing the EQ. The maple neck enhances clarity and responsiveness, and the 35" / 889 mm scale length improves note sustain and B string stability. On the electronics side, the MM-J combination and blend control allow switching from massive, modern lows to more defined and articulated tones. The active EQ (cut and boost) offers real control over bass, mids, and treble, and the master volume with "pull" function for tone control bypass enables quick adjustment of the signal character depending on the situation.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To get the most out of the 35" / 889 mm scale length, favor a set of 5-string extra-long scale strings. For the active electronics, a quality 9V battery is recommended to maintain stable dynamics and consistent output level. A standard strap is also suitable.
