A "high-tech" approach to the volume pedal: Hall effect serving the musician

The Lehle Stereo Volume is one of those pedals that modernize a pedalboard classic: instead of a potentiometer subject to wear, it relies on a magnetic sensor using the Hall effect, discovered by Edwin Hall. Here, the rocker plate does not "rub" a component: it moves an integrated magnet, whose distance is precisely measured by the Hall sensor (made in Germany and calibrated for the exact pedal sweep). This information then drives a level control circuit, providing a smooth feel and reliability designed to last.

Who benefits from the Lehle Stereo Volume, and in what contexts does it make a difference?

The Lehle Stereo Volume is aimed at musicians who want a stereo volume pedal that is both transparent and mechanically flawless: guitarists in stereo rigs (two amps, two monitors, or output from a stereo multi-effects), bassists wishing to preserve attack and harmonics intact, as well as keyboardists and users of stereo sources (synths, samplers).

Live, it becomes an expressive tool for swells, clean fades, level management between parts, or fine control of an effects bus. In studio and sound reinforcement, its outputs usable in balanced mode help to work cleanly towards a console, audio interface, or FOH system without sacrificing signal quality.

Features and design: precision, headroom, and routing flexibility

At the heart of the Lehle Stereo Volume is a stereo Blackmer VCA (voltage-controlled amplifier) replacing the mechanical potentiometer. The level varies according to the voltage from the Hall sensor, allowing for more precise operation than a potentiometer or optical sensor system, while eliminating the typical noise of pot tracks. The result: a usable, silent sweep and very consistent response, ideal for controlling playing dynamics.

The pedal covers a volume range from -92 dB to 0 dB, from near mute to unity gain. Internally, the power supply voltage is rectified, filtered, stabilized, then doubled to reach 18 V: this voltage reserve improves performance at high levels and contributes to a dynamic range rated at 110 dB.

Mechanically, Lehle relies on low-friction smooth polymer bearings to limit mechanical transmissions and achieve very smooth movement. An adjustment screw allows precise tuning of the pedal resistance, from a light touch (for fast swells) to a firmer feel (ultra-stable settings on stage).

Finally, the Stereo Volume is not just a level expression pedal: it also manages the signal. With a mono input signal, the Split function allows feeding two outputs. With stereo or dual mono input, the sum function allows combining inputs to a mono output, useful for certain studio setups, reamping, or bus configurations.

Sound

A good volume pedal must know how to disappear: the Lehle Stereo Volume aims precisely for maximum transparency. Across the entire sweep, it is designed to reproduce the full frequency range of the instrument without "veil" or high-frequency loss, thanks to constant input and output impedances. The response is uniform and progressive, making swells very musical and level control particularly reliable when switching from aggressive pick playing to more nuanced fingerstyle.
