Summary of This Method

Musical dictation remains an essential step to consolidate ear training, refine auditory memory, and gain autonomy in musical reading and writing. Created by Pierre Chepelov and Benoit Menut, this method offers a selection of dictations drawn from an extensive repertoire, from the Middle Ages to contemporary music, to train listening across various styles, writing modes, and sound colors. The goal: to develop an ear capable of quickly identifying rhythmic landmarks, melodic lines, harmonic progressions, and timbral characteristics.

The method is organized into six distinct chapters, each with its own progression. You first work on rhythm dictations to strengthen pulse, subdivision, and note value accuracy. The melody chapter helps you recognize intervals, accents, and phrase directions. The harmony section develops listening skills for chords and functions, useful both in analysis and instrumental practice. The timbres chapter broadens attention to tone color and identification of sound sources.

The mixes section offers particularly formative exercises: dictations with missing parts that engage the skills acquired in the previous four chapters, teaching you to complete, deduce, and verify what is heard. Finally, the error detection exercises train a key skill in music education: spotting mistakes (rhythmic, melodic, or harmonic) and justifying corrections. An effective resource for students in music training programs, but also for any musician wishing to improve intonation, rhythmic sense, and auditory understanding.
