Summary of This Method

Designed by Paul Huvelle, piano lecturer at Wiltz (Grand Duchy of Luxembourg), this work offers a particularly rich collection to discover polyphony on the piano without making it intimidating. The goal is clear: to learn while having fun, to overcome difficulties progressively, and to become familiar with the polyphonic style, an essential step in the pianist's training.

Throughout the pieces, the student explores the fundamental principles of multi-voice writing: what polyphony is, how a canon works, how to identify imitation, and how to approach a fugue. The approach does not aim to be "scholarly," but to develop musical reflexes: listening to voice leading, balancing sound layers, understanding subject entries, and constructing coherent articulation.

The collection thus allows for an early initiation into polyphonic playing, progressively leading to more advanced pieces, up to the two-voice fugues of J.S. Bach. To get the most out of it, the work encourages active and lively practice, relying on proven methods: singing a voice, playing one hand while singing the other, and learning to follow each melodic line as if it were carried by a different instrument.

Press: an article published in L'Education Musicale (issue 112, March 2017) highlights the pedagogical value of this "substantial collection," precious for developing inner hearing and understanding of voices, in order to bring music to life in the student's mind.
