Summary of This Score

In May, in a hedge of holm oaks facing a terrace, a nightingale settles and sings relentlessly, day and night. This poetic starting point permeates the entire piece: it is not a mere "naturalistic" evocation, but a true extraction of musical material from reality. The song, abundant and inventive, becomes a source of forms, gestures, and timbres.

To reveal the internal structure of these vocalizations, the nightingale songs were observed through spectral analysis, then transformed by various processes: transpositions, time dilations, stretchings, and frequency treatments. These operations bring out melodic profiles, trajectories, and harmonic colors that remain directly derived from the initial material. Thus, one perceives music where line, time, and resonance seem to extend the energy of the bird's song while bringing it into a decidedly contemporary language.

Aside from the title, this work has no relation to François Couperin's homonymous piece: the intention lies elsewhere, in the transformation of a natural phenomenon into notation. This score is intended for performers and ensembles curious about contemporary repertoires, sensitive to timbres, micro-variations, and sound construction, and for all those who enjoy exploring music where attentive listening to detail opens up a powerful imagination.
