A Modern Classic, a Pillar of the Manley Range

The Manley Variable Mu has established itself as the reference tube compressor on mix buses and mastering chains. Heir to the "remote cut" technology cherished by vintage units, it combines this with a contemporary and rigorous design by Manley Labs for exemplary reliability in studio environments.

For Whom and For What Uses?

Designed for mix and mastering engineers, the Variable Mu excels on a 2-bus, in stem processing, and on demanding tracks (vocals, bass, pianos, pads). Its stereo input control coupled with channel linking ensures a stable image; separate thresholds and outputs per channel allow for the fine compensations needed in production.

Key Features and Innovations

All-tube variable-mu compression

At the heart of the circuit, the 5670 dual triode continuously adjusts its gain under the action of the tube-rectified side-chain. The Compress mode adopts a gentle 1.5:1 ratio for transparent "glue," while the Limit mode ranges from 4:1 up to 20:1 to control peaks, with a knee that softens as the reduction increases.

Musical envelope control

Variable attack from 25 to 70 ms and five selectable release times ensure precise groove shaping. Harmonic saturation can also be exploited by pushing the input and lowering the output, even with little compression.

Premium audio chain

Manley input/output transformers with nickel laminations housed in mu-metal cases and regulated B+ and heater supplies offer very low noise, controlled distortion, and a perfectly flat response from 20 Hz to 25 kHz.

Studio ergonomics

Stereo linking makes final mix processing immediate; multiple units can be chained for surround configurations. Since 10/2011, the stepped input attenuator provides recall and precision during sessions.
