An Hybrid Special Designed to Blur the Line Between Electric and Acoustic
The Michael Kelly HYBRID SPECIAL fits the spirit of modern "all-in-one" guitars: maintaining the ergonomics and playability of an electric guitar while adding a genuine acoustic channel usable on stage and in the studio. Its chambered body enhances natural resonance, while the dedicated electronics allow instant switching between electric, acoustic, or blended textures.
Who Is It For, and In Which Styles?
This hybrid guitar is especially aimed at intermediate to advanced guitarists who want to cover a wide range of sounds with a single instrument. It is well suited for pop, rock, blues, worship, variety styles, and setlists that alternate clean rhythms, more saturated parts, and "acoustic" accompaniments without changing guitars. The shorter scale length provides a flexible feel under the fingers, appreciated for bends and expressive playing.
The Sound
The combination of a chambered mahogany body + spalted maple top balances warmth, sustain, and definition: mahogany adds body in the mids, while maple provides a sharper attack. On the electric side, the Rockfield SWC pickups at the neck and bridge offer a range from round and singing tones to more incisive sounds, with the possibility to split for airier and more precise timbres. On the electro-acoustic side, the piezo pickup at the nut combined with the Fishman Powerchip electronics delivers a clear and articulated foundation, ideal for defined rhythms. The blended mode allows layering the acoustic attack with the electric presence to add depth in a mix.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
To utilize the separate outputs on the stereo jack, a 6.35 mm (1/4") stereo jack cable (TRS) is recommended. Depending on your setup (amp + PA or two separate inputs), a Y-cable TRS to 2 mono jacks (TS) allows clean separation of electric and acoustic channels.
