A "Modern" Soprano Born from Acoustic Research

The Modern series by Mollenhauer is part of a contemporary instrument-making approach, at the crossroads of tradition and demanding acoustic research. The concept of harmonic recorders, developed from work carried out in the 1990s, aims for the production of cleaner and musically exploitable harmonics, whereas some traditional recorders reserve these fingerings for effects (trills, alternative fingerings) or occasional adjustments.

With the Modern Soprano, Mollenhauer offers a high-end soprano that pushes the usual limits of the instrument: greater range, surprisingly present low register, and an extension that allows tackling more ambitious repertoires. The choice of grenadilla and the integration of dedicated mechanics (Bb key and triple key) confirm this performance- and precision-oriented positioning.

For Which Musicians and Styles

This soprano recorder is primarily aimed at advanced musicians, conservatory students, and professionals seeking a soprano capable of combining finesse and power without hardening the upper register. It is particularly suitable for Baroque repertoires (thanks to the Baroque fingering), but its balance and projection also make it interesting for contemporary music, ensembles, and contexts where the recorder must remain audible above other instruments.

If you already play a "standard" soprano, the Modern Soprano will provide a more stable intonation feel and a more consistent response between registers, especially when exploring demanding fingerings or strong dynamics.

Sound and Design

Grenadilla provides a dense and nuanced timbre, with a clear attack and good dynamic reserve. The "harmonic" design (long bore) promotes increased homogeneity, easier to lock in intonation, and very present projection, while maintaining a sound described as round and full for a soprano. The result: the upper register gains in smoothness and control without losing the brightness necessary for clarity.

The Bb key (body extension to reach low Bb) is not just an additional note: the lengthening of the instrument contributes to a more "settled" sound sensation, with an overall reinforced balance across the entire range. The triple key (Bb, C, C#) improves ergonomics and security of fingerings, while facilitating access to certain fast passages or chromaticisms depending on the musical context.

Finally, the SYNPOR stopper (microporous synthetic material) is designed to better manage breath moisture: it absorbs moisture without swelling, which helps maintain stable dimensions and consistent behavior, even after prolonged use.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To extend the performance and longevity of your instrument, it is advisable to have joint grease (in addition to the one provided) as well as a dedicated cleaning swab for internal cleaning. A soft cloth can also help wipe the body after playing, especially with a dense wood like grenadilla.
