A Modern Classic on the Bass Pedalboard: From Drive to Direct-to-PA

The MXR M80 Bass D.I.+ has established itself as an all-in-one solution for bassists who want to travel light without sacrificing control: preamp, DI, EQ, and distortion in a sturdy pedal format. Its approach is simple and effective: a solid clean channel to lay down the mix, and an independent saturated channel to add grit, bite, or true distortion, while preserving the low-end foundation thanks to the Blend.

Within the MXR lineup, the M80 is typically the Swiss Army knife that serves as both a direct box for stage and studio and a "mix-ready" drive generator, featuring a gate designed for high-gain sounds and busy pedalboards.

For Which Bassist, Styles, and Situations?

The M80 targets a broad audience: from beginner bassists who want a reliable DI and immediately usable clean sound, to seasoned musicians seeking a backup preamp (or main preamp) capable of driving a PA system, audio interface, or amplifier. It excels in rock, punk, metal, alternative, and modern pop, whenever a present bass that "speaks" in the mix is needed.

Live, it's an obvious ally: XLR output to the front of house, 6.35mm Jack output to the amp, and distortion that can be activated at any time to switch from a clean verse to a ripping chorus. In the studio, it allows recording a clean, sculpted foundation and adding a precisely dosed saturated channel without losing the dynamics of your playing.

Controls, Modes, and Connectivity: Everything Designed to Get Straight to the Sound

The distortion channel offers a trio of highly musical controls: Gain for saturation amount, Volume for the channel's output level, and Blend to mix clean and saturated signals. This last control is key: you can go from a simple "grit" that emphasizes attack to a full-on distortion, while retaining the low-end solidity and clarity.

When pushing the drive, the Noise Gate becomes your best friend: it's switchable and adjustable via Trigger, helping to cut hum and hiss between notes, especially useful with single-coil pickups, very sensitive active basses, or daisy-chained pedalboards.

The clean channel features a Color switch that applies a "mix-ready" EQ curve: broader, punchier, perfect for a big modern sound. The 3-band EQ (Bass, Middle, Treble) then allows final tone shaping: firm lows, mids more or less forward to cut through the band, highs adjusted for finger or pick attack. The bypass is buffered, convenient for stabilizing the signal over long cable runs.

Regarding integration, the M80 makes life easier: a balanced XLR output for the console or interface, and 6.35mm Jack outputs to drive an amp, another effects chain, or a tuner via a parallel output. It can also be powered by phantom power through the XLR (depending on your setup), in addition to standard pedal power options.

Sound Character

The MXR M80's character is decidedly "mix-ready": a solid, clear clean tone that keeps the low end well controlled, and a distortion that emphasizes presence and attack without turning your sound into mush. With the Blend, you easily get an articulated saturation that stands out in a wall of guitars while maintaining the weight of the lows. The response to playing remains expressive: lowering right-hand attack or bass volume softens the grit, then you instantly regain bite by playing harder.

This pedal is also found in setups oriented towards rock and metal, used as a preamp/DI and as a drive source, notably by bassists associated with genres ranging from alternative rock to metal. This popularity is explained by one thing: the M80 gets straight to the point and delivers a bass sound that holds its place, both on stage and in recording.
