A Benchmark for Taming High-Gain Setups

When stacking distortions, overdrives, fuzz, compressors, or saturated preamps, background noise quickly rises: hiss, hum, interference... The Boss NS-2 is a classic on modern pedalboards, featuring a detection circuit designed to reduce noise without degrading the playing feel. It naturally fits both in front of the amp or within a more complex chain, where a too aggressive noise gate would cut notes and kill sustain.

Who Is It For?

The NS-2 is ideal for guitarists (from beginners to advanced) who want a clean sound in rehearsal, studio, or live settings. It excels in rock, hard rock, metal, punk, and any context where a lot of gain or compression is used. If you play with a pick and sharp attacks, or if you alternate palm-mutes and clean silences, it helps achieve a more precise and professional sound without sacrificing dynamics.

Settings, Modes, and Pedalboard Integration

The THRESHOLD knob sets the level at which the pedal activates: the higher you set it, the more pronounced the noise cut. The DECAY adjusts the release speed to avoid "pumping" effects and maintain a natural note decay. The MODE switch offers two behaviors: MUTE for very clean silences, and REDUCTION for a more gradual and natural noise reduction. Regarding power, it is compatible with Boss PSA230 and Korg KA189 adapters and features an additional 9V female output for the Boss PCS20 multi-pedal power cable option.

Sound Character

The NS-2 stands out with a discreet and musical action: it cleans background noise without muffling the attack or smoothing out expression. Properly set, it preserves the "direct" feel under the fingers, lets sustain breathe, and respects playing nuances (light attack, palm-mute, vibrato). The result: a cleaner sound, sharper note cuts, and better clarity, especially with generous saturation.
