A modern octave-fuzz in the spirit of great rock tones
The Signature Slash Octave Fuzz follows the grand tradition of "octave" fuzzes that have marked rock history, with that blend of hairy saturation and harmonics that "sing" as soon as you play harder. Here, the approach is decidedly performance-oriented: you keep a solid direct sound, onto which you can layer a massive sub octave, then trigger an octave up "buzzy lead" to cut through the mix. This pedal is designed to recapture iconic textures while maintaining a modern and efficient ergonomics on a pedalboard.
For whom, which styles, and in what contexts?
This pedal is aimed at intermediate to advanced guitarists who want an expressive fuzz and a palette of octaves without multiplying pedals. It shines in hard rock, classic rock, stoner, garage, and blues-rock genres, but can also become a creative tool in alternative and psyche thanks to the blend of octave up and sub octave. In the studio, it serves both to beef up a mono riff and to create overdubs that stand out; on stage, the second footswitch allows you to "boost" the octave up on a key passage without changing your entire setting.
Controls, modes, and operating logic
The pedal offers five potentiometers: Volume, Tone, Fuzz, Sub Octave, and Octave Up. The highlight is how the sections interact: the Sub Octave can remain very clear and "clean" to thicken your sound, or be routed into the fuzz circuit via the Sub Into Fuzz switch for a denser and more aggressive grain. The main footswitch activates the effect (and the sub octave), while a second footswitch activates the octave up fuzz additionally, perfect for switching from a heavy riff to a cutting lead with one press.
For further refinement, internal adjustments allow fine-tuning of the octave up section: a Gain trim adjusts the intensity of the octave up fuzz, and a Tone trim sculpts its EQ. Handy if you want a very biting octave up for solos, or conversely a rounder tone to blend into a busy mix. Regarding bypass, it features a true hardwire bypass to preserve the signal when the effect is off.
The sound
At the heart of the Signature Slash Octave Fuzz is a thick, granular, and highly responsive to playing dynamics character: the harder you play, the more harmonics reveal themselves. The sub octave adds a "muscular" low-mid that makes the amp sound bigger, ideal for mono lines or simple riffs that need to fill space. The octave up fuzz adds that very lively "sawtooth" harmonic edge, particularly effective around the 12th fret and on the bridge pickup for leads that soar. Unsurprisingly, this pedal is associated with the world of Slash, but its concept also appeals to rock/metal guitarists broadly, including for more experimental textures.

Questions frequently asked
How does the sub octave and the Sub Into Fuzz switch work?
The Sub Octave setting adds a lower octave, with a fixed cutoff frequency at 149 Hz. The Sub Into Fuzz switch sends this octave into the fuzz circuit to achieve a thicker grain.
Can the upper octave be activated separately?
A second UP footswitch activates the octave up fuzz independently from the ON footswitch. Internal Gain and Tone trims allow adjusting its level and EQ.
What power supply is needed for the MXR Signature Slash Octave Fuzz?
A 9 V DC power supply is required, consuming 17 mA. The pedal has only one 6.35 mm jack input and output.
Is this fuzz suitable for hard rock riffs and solos?
The fuzz section offers a gain range of 40 dB, while the octave up provides 20 dB of gain. The unit is designed for hard rock, classic rock, stoner, garage, and blues-rock styles, with an activatable upper octave for lead parts.
What are the dimensions and bypass type of this pedal?
The enclosure measures approximately 60 x 127 x 92 mm and weighs about 0.6 kg. A true hardwire bypass preserves the signal when the effect is off.
