A Classic MXR in the Lineage of Vintage Phasers

The MXR Phase 100 (model M107) follows the tradition of phasers that have shaped the history of guitar tones. Often described as the "big sister" of a more minimalist phaser, it retains the DNA of MXR modulations while offering more character and variety thanks to its different modes. The result: a modulation pedal designed to cover both retro atmospheres and thicker textures typical of psychedelic, funk, and rock sounds.

Who It's For and Which Styles the Phase 100 Shines In

The Phase 100 is aimed at guitarists (and keyboardists) who want an expressive phaser pedal that is easy to dial in but capable of varying colors without multiplying knobs. In clean settings, it adds lively movement to chords, perfect for pop, funk, and vintage rock. With overdrive or distortion, it adds a broader dimension for leads, riffs, and more psychedelic passages.

In the studio, it helps place a guitar in a modulated space without resorting to complex processing. Live, its direct controls allow adjusting the speed to the song's tempo with a single gesture and switching from subtle modulation to a more pronounced sweep depending on the passage.

Controls, Modes, and Ergonomics: Simple Yet Surprisingly Versatile

The MXR Phase 100 gets straight to the point: one input, one output, a footswitch, an LED, and controls designed to be used "by ear" within seconds. The Speed knob controls the modulation rate (slow and deep for swirling pads, faster for a snappy phasing). The Intensity knob adjusts the depth and presence of the effect, allowing you to dose the amount of movement in the signal.

Its real uniqueness comes from the 4-position rotary selector, which provides access to four modulation signatures: a very soft option reminiscent of a light phaser, a more classic and pronounced option, a denser and more textured option, and a combined mode offering a more complex movement. This voicing approach lets you quickly find a phaser that fits the track without endless tweaking.

Regarding power, the pedal can run on a 9V battery (installed via the bottom plate) or a 9V DC power supply in pedal format, convenient for clean pedalboard integration.

Sound

The Phase 100 delivers an organic and rich modulation, with a sweep that can remain subtle to thicken a clean tone or become very present to create a psychedelic and "spatial" atmosphere. It is particularly interesting for guitarists who like to feel the effect respond to their playing: in rhythm, the phasing can add a sense of width and movement, while in lead it adds a singing texture that highlights sustained notes.

Depending on the selected mode, you can go from a more subtle and silky phaser to more pronounced curves that sculpt the midrange and deliver that famous swirling effect. Placed before distortion, it produces a tighter and snappier phasing; placed after, it emphasizes the sweep effect and the sense of spaciousness.
