From the original Phase 90 to the EVH signature model: the "swirl machine" revisited

The Phase 90 is one of the most recorded phasers in guitar history: a seemingly simple modulation capable of transforming a clean tone into a living texture or adding that characteristic three-dimensional movement to a tight crunch. With the MXR EVH90, the goal isn't to reinvent the formula but to bring it as close as possible to what Eddie sought: a musical phasing that integrates with distortion without muddying the attack, and that can shift from an "old school" character to a more modern presence depending on the song.

Visually, the nod is immediate: the finish inspired by iconic EVH stripes recalls the pedal's rock DNA. But it's especially the Script switch that sets the EVH90 apart in the lineup: one pedal covering two Phase 90 approaches without multiplying controls or complicating your pedalboard.

Who is the MXR EVH90 for, and in which styles does it make a difference?

The MXR EVH Phase 90 is suited both for guitarists new to modulation and experienced players who want a "plug and play" phaser with instantly professional results. Its single potentiometer allows quick dialing of the rotation tempo, making it ideal for live use (fast adjustment between songs) as well as studio work (efficient takes without losing inspiration).

Stylistically, it naturally excels in rock and hard rock, but also shines in blues and funk : on a clean tone, it adds width and movement; on an overdrive, it delivers that famous "swirl" that makes the sound feel like it's breathing. It works very well before distortion for a smoother, singing effect, or after for a more pronounced and dramatic modulation, depending on your signal chain and amp.
