What Osmium Distortion Matrix Is For
Osmium Distortion Matrix is a creative distortion effect designed to transform any sound source within Reason: drums, basses, synths, vocals, guitars, mix buses, or even already processed sounds. Where a classic distortion is limited to a single character, Osmium combines multiple algorithm families and a flexible routing logic to allow you to move from analog warmth and controlled saturation to aggressive, granular, lo-fi, or downright experimental textures. Thanks to multiband processing, you can sculpt tone and impact with surgical precision, ideal for electronic production, modern rock, hip-hop, film music, and sound design.
Main Features
4 distortion modules covering major grain families
Osmium provides four complementary distortion modules, each designed for specific musical uses. Saturation is perfect for thickening a track, adding harmonics, and enhancing perceived loudness. Overdrive delivers a more pronounced bite, ideal on basses, leads, and drums. The wavefolder opens the door to complex timbres rich in harmonics, especially interesting on simple waveforms (synths) to achieve a more "modular" sound. Finally, bitcrush allows signal degradation for digital, lo-fi, glitch colors and sharp textures.
Effects matrix and free routing for complex chains
At the heart of Osmium, the Distortion Matrix facilitates the creation of advanced processing chains without slowing down your workflow. You have an input effect slot to prepare the signal, a matrix of 9 effect slots with free routing to stack, cross, and re-route processing, then an output effect slot to finalize the sound. This architecture is ideal for combining distortion, dynamics, filters, equalization, and creative effects to achieve a sound that is both powerful and controlled.
Multiband processing up to 3 bands
The multiband mode (up to three frequency bands) allows you to process each spectral zone differently. For example, you can keep a solid and clear low end while aggressively treating the mids to make a synth stand out, or add dirty brightness only on the highs of a drum break. This is a very effective approach to maintain mix clarity while pushing character, particularly useful on drum buses, bass music, and sound design.
Advanced modulations, movement, and expressiveness
Osmium integrates an extended modulation matrix with two LFOs to animate parameters continuously, a curve sequencer to program rhythmic evolutions, and an envelope follower to make the distortion react to the signal dynamics (attack, sustain, energy). This is complemented by CV control for seamless integration into the Reason ecosystem, ideal if you enjoy automation, complex modulations, and living patches.
External effects loops and ready-to-produce patches
Thanks to the external effects loops, you can incorporate any effect from the Reason Rack directly into Osmium's signal chain, greatly expanding sound design possibilities. To speed up your workflow, the plugin includes over 200 patches designed by experts: characterful distortions, bit crushing, speaker simulation, dynamics, sound destruction, and many other starting points to quickly find a unique character.

Questions frequently asked
Is the Osmium Distortion Matrix compatible with macOS and Windows?
This Rack Extension is designed for Reason. Supported systems are macOS 10.15 and Windows 10 64-bit. The required configuration includes 4 GB of RAM and a multicore processor.
Can distortion be applied to multiple frequency bands?
The multi-band processing allows splitting up to 3 frequency bands to apply distinct settings to bass, mids, and highs.
How many effects can be routed within the matrix?
The chain includes 1 effect slot at the input, a matrix of 9 freely routable slots, and 1 effect slot at the output. External loops allow inserting Reason Rack effects into this chain.
What types of distortion are included?
Four modules are offered: saturation, overdrive, wavefolder, and bitcrush. Saturation thickens the signal, while wavefolder and bitcrush target complex harmonics or digital textures.
What modulations and presets are available?
The modulation section features 2 LFOs, a curve sequencer, an envelope follower, and CV control. More than 200 patches are included, covering saturation, bitcrushing, and speaker simulation among others.
