A Classic Ribbon Stereo Microphone, Reimagined for Modern Studios

The SF-12 is part of the great tradition of ribbon microphones, sought after for their organic sound, smooth high-frequency response, and ability to capture a realistic soundstage. Here, the concept goes further: instead of combining two different microphones, the SF-12 integrates two matched ribbon motors mounted one above the other, each oriented at 45 degrees relative to the central axis. This geometry corresponds to the classic Blumlein configuration, particularly appreciated in stereo recording for its depth and precision, while maintaining exemplary phase coherence.

Its design features a modern ribbon that limits sound diffraction and cavity resonance, which helps achieve a cleaner reproduction with a frequency response that remains convincing regardless of positioning angle. The result: a stereo image that "holds up" in mixing, with an authentic ribbon signature but more predictable behavior in studio situations.

Intended Uses and Target Profiles

The SF-12 targets sound engineers, production studios, and demanding home studio users who want a quick-to-set-up stereo solution without compromising quality. It excels whenever a natural image and realistic depth are sought: piano, strings, string quartets, choirs, drum overheads with a velvety sound, guitar amps (for ambience capture or as a complement to a close mic), and even room capture to add air to a production.

Its bidirectional directivity (figure-8 pattern) captures both front and rear, allowing the room acoustics to be treated as a true instrument. In Blumlein, you get an immersive stereo image while maintaining excellent mono compatibility. And if you want more control during mixing, the option to record in Mid/Side allows you to adjust stereo width afterward (via M/S decoding), a valuable advantage for image and placement in a dense mix.

Design, Operation, and Key Strengths in Sound Capture

Blumlein Configuration: Precision, Depth, Coherence

The SF-12 is built around two matched ribbon microphones arranged coincidentally with a 90-degree angle between their axes (45 degrees on each side of center). This architecture offers a stable stereo image, excellent source localization, and very realistic ambience reproduction. It also contributes to minimal off-axis coloration, useful when sources move slightly or when the room "breathes."

Ultra-Thin Ribbons and Transient Response

Each 1.8-micron ribbon (approximately 0.3 g) is designed for remarkable transient response, delivering a precise attack sensation without harshness in the highs. The magnet and pole piece assembly is engineered for an extended and linear frequency response, without pronounced peaks or significant dips, to minimize equalization corrections and preserve immediate naturalness during monitoring.

Industrial Iron Body and Magnetic Design

The industrial iron body serves as a magnetic return element to achieve minimal flux dispersion while maintaining a compact form factor. This approach contributes to the microphone's overall stability and sensitivity level, useful for capturing acoustic sources with finesse, provided an appropriate preamplification chain is used.

Phantom Power and Studio Connectivity

An important integration point: the SF-12 requires 48V phantom power. It connects via a 5-pin XLR output and comes with an adapter cable to 2x 3-pin XLR for connecting to two standard microphone inputs. In practice, this facilitates routing to two matched preamps or to an audio interface with two identical gain channels, preserving left-right balance and the stereo image.
