Summary of This Book

This new edition of the complete piano music of Erik Satie, gathered in three volumes, offers a complete overhaul of the century-old edition of his piano works. The goal is clear: to provide pianists, teachers, and students with a piano score that is both practical to sight-read and firmly established, thanks to a meticulous return to manuscript sources and early publications. The result emphasizes editorial coherence, readability, and musical relevance, supporting both daily technical work and concert preparation.

Throughout the pages, one finds the entire set of solo piano pieces (or reductions), with a valuable opening onto rarer documents: some lesser-known earlier pieces, including the Petite Sonate written for Vincent d'Indy at the Schola Cantorum, as well as trial versions and initial states of famous pages. Among these insights are notably San Bernardo (trial version of Españaña, 1913) and very different early versions of Les Pantins dansent (1914). The edition also incorporates traces of Satie's work at the Schola (exercises completed between 1907 and 1912), additional attempts around the Enfantines, as well as earlier drafts related to Sports et divertissements.

The content covers a wide range of Satie's language, from miniature character pieces to more structured gestures, with concrete reference points to support interpretation: metronomic indications guide tempo choices, and playing suggestions illuminate certain aesthetics (notably the Rose+Croix period pieces) to avoid a uniformly "slow and tranquil" reading. Among the works and collections included are, for example, Sonatine bureaucratique, Rag-time parade, the Nocturnes (including Nos. 3 to 6), La Belle Excentrique, as well as pages related to Relâche and Cinéma, not to mention exercises, chorales, sketches, and harmonizations such as Harmonies délectables.
