Composed in just four days, these 24 miniatures finely capture observations, scenes, and emotions that any young musician can easily relate to. Each piece is a musical "vignette": a short format that allows working on expressiveness without getting lost in length, while developing essential skills (touch quality, voice balance, articulation, phrasing, and dynamics). It is precisely this blend of poetry and efficiency that has made this collection a cornerstone of the piano repertoire with an educational purpose since its publication in 1878.
This edition is based on the composer's original manuscript and constitutes the first American edition of this editorial work, complementing the Schirmer Performance Editions series. To support learning, a CD is provided with the complete recording of the pieces by editor Alexandre Dossin. A graduate of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, he also won a first prize at the Martha Argerich International Piano Competition in 2003, offering a valuable listening reference to build style, musical breathing, and tonal color.
