An Iconic Selmer Bass Clarinet, Designed in the Great French Tradition
Manufactured in France for over a century, Henri SELMER Paris clarinets reflect workshop craftsmanship and recognized musical excellence. The Privilège bass clarinet continues this legacy: a model designed to offer exceptional acoustics, modern ergonomics, and playing stability that meets the demands of today's musicians, both on stage and in orchestras.
For Which Musicians and Styles?
The Selmer Privilège is a bass clarinet intended for advanced and professional musicians, as well as conservatory players seeking a reference instrument. It excels in classical music (orchestra, chamber music, contemporary repertoire), but its responsive flexibility and ability to shape the "sound texture" also make it an excellent choice for jazz, contemporary music, and ensembles (wind bands, brass bands) where projection and precision are essential.
Sound and Design
Thanks to its grenadilla body (a dense wood known for harmonic richness), the Privilège delivers a deep, centered, and nuanced tone, with notable homogeneity across registers. The carefully crafted bore (slightly differentiated between upper and lower joints) contributes to stable intonation and an astonishingly natural response for a bass clarinet. The silver-plated brass bell adds a clear response and solid projection, while the leather pads equipped with metal resonators enhance grip, attack precision, and articulation clarity.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
This bass clarinet comes with a Selmer Focus mouthpiece, a ligature, and a mouthpiece cap. The most relevant daily complement is a set of bass clarinet reeds suited to your usual strength, as well as a dedicated bass clarinet swab for regular maintenance (in addition to the supplied kit). If you play standing, a strap or harness can also improve comfort, considering the instrument's weight.
