AMBEO: Sennheiser's immersive vision for spatial capture
The AMBEO VR Mic is part of the Sennheiser AMBEO ecosystem dedicated to immersive sound. Its ambisonic approach aims to produce a complete representation of the sound space, designed to support the creation of 360-degree content and virtual reality projects. The goal is clear: to offer a coherent, reproducible, and usable sound capture in major post-production environments without multiplying microphones or complicating on-location setup.
Who is it for and what are its uses?
This microphone is intended for VR creators, directors, sound designers, production teams, and studios who want to integrate a realistic sound bubble with the image. It is also relevant for concert recordings, installations, museums, video games, or interactive experiences whenever credible spatialization and flexible post-production are sought. Its "single capture point" format facilitates phase coherence and sound staging while reducing placement constraints.
Usable and precise ambisonic sound capture
The design is based on four coordinated KE 14 capsules, each with cardioid directivity, assembled in a tetrahedron. This geometry allows recording the sound environment all around the microphone to achieve a complete spherical rendering. In post-production, binaural playback and ambisonic editing enable virtual "rotation" of the sound scene to realign the perspective with the image, a major advantage for 360-degree content.
A-Format to B-Format Conversion: a time saver in post-production
The signal from the capsules is recorded in A-Format (microphone-related format). The AMBEO A-B Format Converter plug-in is provided to convert it to B-Format, the standardized ambisonic format, which is more practical for editing, mixing, and integration into immersive playback tools. The result: a more direct workflow, increased compatibility, and more comfortable editing of orientations and space.

Questions frequently asked
Is the Sennheiser Ambeo VR Mic suitable for 360° sound recording?
The four KE 14 cardioid capsules, arranged in a tetrahedral array, capture the surrounding sound environment for spherical recording intended for 360° content and virtual reality.
How to convert A-Format files to B-Format?
The AMBEO A-B Format Converter plug-in is provided to convert capsule signals from A-Format to B-Format. This standardized ambisonic format facilitates editing and mixing. The orientation of the sound scene can then be adjusted in post-production to follow the image.
What type of connectors does this ambisonic microphone use?
The connectivity is XLR format.
What is the maximum sound pressure level it can handle?
With a maximum sound pressure level of 130 dB SPL, this microphone can be considered for concert recordings and loud sound environments.
What are the dimensions of the AMBEO VR mic?
The microphone measures 215 mm in length and weighs 400 g. Its diameter is specified as 49 mm / 25 mm.
