A Second Chapter in the Virtual Microphone System: From ML-1 to ML-2

The ML-2 is the second model in this virtual microphone system, designed to complement the approach initiated with a reference microphone like the ML-1. While a large diaphragm is often favored for vocal takes or certain versatile sources, the ML-2 adopts a small diaphragm to address typical studio situations where placement precision, directivity, and compactness are decisive. Its goal remains the same: to offer the most linear capture possible so that modeling can credibly reproduce the grain and dynamics of various "classic" microphones.

In this product line logic, the ML-2 positions itself as a tool oriented towards instrument recording and close miking: guitar amps, snare drums, toms, percussion, strings, brass, and all sources where you want to stick to the sweet spot without struggling with the bulk of a larger microphone.

A Microphone Designed for Instrument Recording in Studio, Home Studio, and Live Recording

The ML-2 targets musicians, sound engineers, and creators who want to multiply colors without multiplying purchases, while maintaining a modern workflow. In recording, it becomes an excellent choice whenever you need to lock in a take quickly: capture with a clean base, then refine the sonic identity by selecting a suitable emulation for the mix.

Thanks to its small diaphragm, the ML-2 is particularly comfortable on sources requiring tight placement: edge of a guitar speaker cone, proximity to a snare drumhead, attack zone of an acoustic guitar, or close miking of an instrument within an ensemble. This compact format also better manages mechanical constraints (stands, clamps, space around the source) without sacrificing precision.

Modeling, Repolarization, and Compatibility: The Heart of the ML-2

Linear Capture for Credible Emulations

The principle of a modeling microphone relies on the most neutral capture possible. The ML-2 is announced with a linear response and a signature close to that of the ML-1, to provide a coherent base within the system. The result: changes in emulations are more likely to translate into real artistic choices (attack, presence, warmth, projection) rather than artifacts.

Side Switch: A Capsule That Adapts to Microphone Families

The side switch repolarizes the capsule to emulate both dynamic and condenser microphones. Concretely, this broadens the range of possible sounds depending on the source: bite and focus typical of certain dynamic references on amps or snare drums, or detail and openness associated with condensers on more nuanced instruments.

Instrument Emulations: A Palette of Essential References

The ML-2 can recreate the sound of a complete set of instrument microphones, including dynamics (in the spirit of well-known references like "57" or "421"), classic cardioid ribbons (type "121"), iconic small diaphragms (such as "451" and "222"), as well as widely used large diaphragms in studios (in the spirit of "414" or a tube mic "67"). This variety is ideal for adapting the microphone to the source and style, whether you seek an aggressive, soft, vintage, modern, or more spacious take.

Optimization with Dedicated Interface and Included Software License

The ML-2 is optimized for the Slate Digital VRS8 Thunderbolt audio interface to make the most of the modeling ecosystem. It comes with a license for VMC's "Classic Instruments" software, granting access to microphone characters oriented towards instrument recording.

Important Note: usage requires the copy protection service iLok Cloud or an iLok 2 or iLok 3 dongle.
