What is Sonnox Oxford Dynamic EQ (Nat) For?

Oxford Dynamic EQ is a dynamic equalizer plugin designed to intelligently correct and shape a signal where static EQ quickly reaches its limits. Rather than cutting or boosting constantly, each band reacts according to the content: you eliminate a resonance only when it becomes intrusive, or control harshness in the highs without dulling the rest of the track.

It is suitable for both mixing (individual tracks, instrument groups) and work on buses and the 2-bus, with a signature known for its transparency. It is a particularly effective tool to save time compared to manual automation, while maintaining a more natural and coherent result.

Main Features

5 Type-3 Bands: Musicality and Fine Control

The core of the plugin relies on 5 bands using the Oxford Type-3 curve, with a Proportional-Q behavior often appreciated for its musicality: the more you boost the gain, the narrower the filter becomes, which helps target a precise area without damaging the overall balance. The bands can overlap freely to build complex corrections, from simple "cleaning" to very detailed sculpting.

Per-band Dynamics: Compression/Expansion Upwards or Downwards

Each band can act in compression or expansion, both upwards and downwards. The result: you can both tame a frequency range when it exceeds a certain level and enhance presence when it is lacking, in an automated and musical way.

Triggering by Threshold or Onset Detection

In addition to classic triggering by threshold, Oxford Dynamic EQ offers a distinctive feature: Onset Detection. It allows engaging the effect based on transients, opening very precise possibilities on percussive elements: controlling the impact of a snare, taming an aggressive hi-hat, or stabilizing a kick attack without crushing the body of the sound.

Mid/Side and Detection Routing: A True Toolbox for Sculpting Space

For each band, the plugin can process and/or detect from different channels: mono, stereo, mid, or side. This per-band routing is especially useful for "invisible" corrections: bringing vocals forward in the center without disturbing the side balance, or conversely opening a mix by controlling certain frequencies on the side. The internal/external sidechain options per band further enhance precision, whether to create space between kick and bass or to manage masking between vocals and instruments.
