Historical Context and Positioning Within the Range

In the 1980s, TAMA's Superstar and Imperialstar series made their mark with distinctive sound and durability. With Starclassic Maple, the brand aimed to go further: offering an acoustic drum kit capable of transcending trends and serving the drummer's musicality, regardless of style, technique, or playing intent. This approach popularized the use of thinner shells, known for their sensitivity and ability to "speak" quickly.

The Exotic Finish variant crowns this positioning by adding a luxurious dimension through unique wood finishes. Here, the outer Movingui ply provides a unique visual identity and remarkable aesthetic coherence, fitting for an instrument intended for professional setups.

Who This Drum Kit Is For

This TAMA Starclassic Maple is primarily aimed at intermediate to expert drummers seeking an expressive, reliable, and versatile kit for both studio and stage. The 22 / 12 / 16 configuration is a widely appreciated standard for covering a broad repertoire: modern rock, pop, funk, RnB, fusion, electric jazz, gospel, and contemporary music requiring a prominent bass drum and generous toms.

If you enjoy varying your attack (finger playing, rebound, controlled rimshots), working on dynamics, or switching from tight and precise tuning to deeper, heavier tuning, this acoustic drum kit offers an ideal foundation. Note: the kit is delivered without a snare drum, allowing you to select a snare that matches your identity (wood, metal, deep, piccolo) without compromise.

Features and Innovations

The heart of this Starclassic Maple lies in a set of technical choices focused on performance. The Star-Mount system promotes the natural resonance of the toms by minimizing stress on the shell while maintaining exemplary stability. The Quick-Lock tom mounts speed up assembly and disassembly, a real advantage for stage changes and tours.

The die-cast hoops contribute to a more defined attack, more stable tuning, and a precise playing feel, especially appreciated when seeking a clear and "focused" sound on the microphone. The claw hooks with rubber spacers help reduce unwanted noise and preserve the finish. The floor tom gains comfort and control with air-cushioned legs, and the Hold Tight washers reinforce mechanical stability for an instrument that remains solid even in the most demanding contexts.

Finally, the Starclassic Maple range offers several hardware finishes to harmonize the kit's aesthetic: Black Nickel, Chrome, and Smoked Black Nickel. It also stands out for great modularity, with over 30 shell sizes available in the series, allowing you to build a custom set around the same signature.

Sound

Maple is renowned for its natural balance: deep but controlled lows, rich mids that add body, and smooth highs that retain musicality even at high volume. On a kit like this, the thin shells enhance the immediacy: the note comes out quickly, with very sensitive response to playing nuances and lively resonance.

The 22 x 14 bass drum offers an excellent compromise between power and definition: enough punch for rock and pop while maintaining a clear attack for modern styles and close mic'ing. The 12 x 8 tom suits both tight, articulate tunings and rounder tunings, while the 16 x 16 floor tom provides the expected depth, with good projection and a solid foundation in the mix.

The outer Movingui ply mainly adds a premium visual identity but also contributes to surface rigidity, which can favor a more "direct" projection depending on tuning and head choice. The original Evans heads provide a reliable base to use the kit immediately, before refining your sound according to your playing style (single ply for more openness, double ply for more control, coated for more warmth and a matte attack).
