A Mojomojo Revised by Paul Gilbert: Amp-like Drive Pushed Further

The Mojomojo is appreciated for its analog overdrive with an "amp-like" character, capable of staying clear on chords while maintaining a true response to playing dynamics. With the Paul Gilbert Edition, TC Electronic builds on this foundation and steers it toward a more aggressive register: some circuit tweaks, a purple visual identity, and above all a more expressive behavior when pushed hard.

The most notable change is the replacement of the Voice switch with a "11" switch. The idea is simple: keep the Mojomojo DNA but add a "whip crack" mode to switch from a thick overdrive to a more muscular drive, ready for cutting riffs and solos that need to stand out in the mix.

For Whom, Which Styles, and In What Contexts?

The Mojomojo Paul Gilbert Edition is aimed at guitarists who want a versatile overdrive pedal, but clearly tailored for rock, hard rock, shred, pop-rock terrains and all situations where sustain, presence, and a sharp attack are sought. It also works very well for modern blues-rock: lower the gain, let the dynamics breathe, and use the EQ to adjust the low end according to the guitar and amp.

In the studio, it serves both as a main drive and as a saturation layer to stack with amp crunch. In live settings, its compact format and immediate controls make it an easy pedal to manage: a balanced "rhythm" setting, then switching to "11" for a more aggressive gain boost during solos. On a pedalboard, it naturally finds its place before a distortion (to tighten it up) or after a boost/compressor (to thicken the tone).

Controls, Modes, and Design: Efficient, Intuitive, and Designed for Playing

The pedal offers a deliberately straightforward interface: Drive to adjust saturation, Level to set output volume and push the amp input, plus a very practical active EQ with independent Bass and Treble. This approach is ideal for adapting the pedal to single-coil or humbucker pickups, but also for quickly compensating for an amp that is too dark, too bright, or for a stage that reacts differently.

The "11" switch activates a massive gain increase: more drive, attack, and density without having to adjust knobs mid-song. The design also includes an increased internal voltage (more headroom before unwanted saturation), resulting in a broader playing feel, a more open sound, and better transient response when playing aggressively.

Finally, the true bypass preserves the guitar's tone when the effect is off. Power supply is flexible: 9V battery for simple setups, or 9V DC power supply for regular use on a pedalboard.

The Sound

The Mojomojo Paul Gilbert Edition delivers a thick and punchy overdrive, with a solid low end and well-defined attack. The grain remains usable on full chords: you get saturation that "sticks" to the playing, is pick-responsive, and sufficiently articulated to maintain precision in fast passages.

With moderate settings, it offers a warm, dynamic overdrive that can serve as a "foundation" for crunch. Activating the "11" switch transforms the pedal: more gain, more aggression, and a more immediate feel, perfect for singing leads, sharp rock licks, and biting rhythms. The active EQ is a real asset for sculpting tone: tighten the bass for more clarity or boost it for a wider sound, while adjusting brightness according to the guitar and speaker cabinet.
