An MK4 Evolution Designed for Clarity and Dynamics
The MultiCab MK4 continues the simple and effective approach that made the series successful, while pushing simulation quality further: Tsakalis has revised its modeling process to improve clarity, dynamics, and playing feel. The idea remains the same: to achieve a credible and musical speaker sound without relying on screens, submenus, or complicated setups.
The MK4's philosophy is also clear on the technology side: Tsakalis deliberately chose to not use IR. Instead, the pedal relies on an architecture where an always-active analog path works in tandem with a parallel digital path dedicated to virtual speakers and room ambience, for realistic response and very low latency.
Who Is the MultiCab MK4 For? From Home Studio to Stage
The MultiCab MK4 is aimed at guitarists who want to regain the coherence of a miked cabinet but with a lightweight, fast, and reliable setup. On a pedalboard, it becomes an excellent guitar DI tool to an audio interface or PA system, ideal for both live performance and home recording.
It suits intermediate musicians looking for a ready-to-use sound as well as demanding guitarists who want to refine the "recording capture" (microphone type, power amp character, cabinet openness). Rock, blues, metal, pop, worship, funk, or more ambient music: the 8 presets and ambience control allow you to switch from a tight and precise sound to a wider, more "studio" feel.
The MK4 is also designed for silent use: plug in headphones, add an audio source via the AUX input, and you get a super practical workstation for warming up, rehearsing a set, or improvising over backing tracks.
Controls, Modes, and Editing: All That Matters, Without Menus
The MultiCab MK4 integrates the essential elements of an "amp + cabinet + mics" chain into a direct pedal. The analog path handles preamplification, power amp voicing, cabinet type, and microphone type, while the parallel digital path manages virtual speakers and natural room ambience.
The preamp section is built around 2 JFET stages for a response and feel close to tube behavior, with tone control and 2 modes: CLEAN and HOT. For the power amp, you have 2 types inspired by a push-pull topology, with colors associated with EL34 or 6L6 tubes. To refine the projection and low-end breathing, the pedal offers 3 rear cabinet types: CLOSE, SEMI-OPEN, and OPEN.
The mic capture is adjustable with 3 microphone types: DYNAMIC, RIBBON, and BOTH. Finally, the AMBIENCE control adds a natural room ambience: as if a third mic were placed at a distance to capture reflections. Push it beyond noon to add a warm depth without drowning the attack.
The 8 presets are directly accessible and can be customized via the USB 2 type B connection and the dedicated T.A.W. Editor app (PC, Mac, Linux). You can assign speakers to each slot, organize favorites, rename, import, and create groups of 8 speakers. The pedal also provides access to more than 55 free proprietary speaker simulations, covering a wide range of sought-after cabinets.
Sound
The MultiCab MK4 aims for a credible and organic speaker sound with a direct playing feel thanks to its very low latency. The JFET preamp emphasizes dynamics and pick attack responsiveness: you can stay clean and defined in CLEAN mode or gain density and grit in HOT mode, while maintaining good high-frequency control through EQ.
The choices of power amp (EL34 or 6L6), cabinet (from close to open), and microphone (dynamic, ribbon, or both) allow you to sculpt the texture: from a tight and punchy sound for rhythms to a more wide and enveloping response for leads and "recording-ready" tones. The AMBIENCE adds that extra air that helps the guitar find its place in a mix, especially when using the XLR output to a console or audio interface.
