A handcrafted drum machine with a strong 8-bit character
Hand-assembled in France, the Twisted Electrons deton8 boasts a raw and creative sonic personality: it features the percussive 8-bit aesthetic, enriched by a modern approach to real-time manipulation. Positioned halfway between a sampler and a drum synthesizer, it stands as a groove machine designed for spontaneity, sound design, and performance.
Who is the deton8 for, and in which styles does it make a difference?
The deton8 targets experienced musicians as well as curious beatmakers seeking a different drum machine that's quick to master and formidable for creating material. Perfect for techno, electro, industrial, break/jungle, lo-fi synthwave, and any context where dirty, edgy, or glitchy rhythms are desired. In the studio, it excels at generating variations and happy accidents; live, its effects and control functions make it a performance-oriented instrument.
Features and innovations
The deton8's engine combines 8-bit percussive samples with a layer of wavetable synthesis, featuring 8 voices (Kick, Snare, Metal (hats), Clap, Can (metallic sounds), Tom, Nut (woody sounds), SYNTH). Each voice benefits from a sequencer approach focused on modulation: pitch and decay per step, sample playback forward or backward per track, and a global transposition to instantly change the track's color.
For textures and transitions, the deton8 includes tools tailored for live use: 8 Stutter modes (beat repeat, forward/backward granular, pendulum scratch, buzz/texture, random/noise, spin up/down), a delay with variable time and pitch shifting up/down, and a ring mod with variable frequency. Add to that per-voice distortion, a sound variation knob specific to each track (sub on kick, snappy on snare, texture on hats, arpeggiation on synth), and the Pump effect (sidechain compression emulation) to achieve a breathing groove that "pumps" like a club production.

Questions frequently asked
Twisted Electrons deton8: what MIDI and audio connections are available?
The connectivity includes USB, MIDI, and Sync In inputs, as well as USB, MIDI, Sync Out, headphone, and 2 x jack outputs. The USB to Host port is present for connection to a host computer.
Can custom samples be imported into the deton8?
The sampler is indicated as absent. The machine uses 8-bit percussive samples combined with a wavetable synthesis layer, without any mention of a sample import feature.
What performance effects are integrated?
Eight Stutter modes are available, including beat repeat, forward or backward granular, swing, random, spin up, and spin down. The delay offers variable time with pitch shifting up or down. A variable frequency ring modulator complements the per-voice distortion.
What are the 8 voices of the deton8?
The eight voices are Kick, Snare, Metal, Clap, Can, Tom, Nut, and SYNTH, the latter being based on a hapiNES triangle bass with an arpeggiator.
Does the sequencer allow pitch variations and reverse playback?
Each track can receive pitch and decay variations per step. Sample playback can be set forward or backward individually on each track, while a global transpose alters the overall key.
