What UAD Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection Is Used For
UAD Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection is an optical compression plug-in designed to provide musical leveling and immediate stability to your tracks. It excels whenever dynamic control is needed without crushing the performance, thanks to smooth and progressive gain reduction typical of optical circuits.
In production, it is often used as the main compressor on vocals (to smooth out level variations), on bass (to solidify foundation and sustain), and on guitars (to thicken without aggressiveness). Depending on the chosen model, it can also suit sources richer in transients like drums and percussion when faster compression is desired while maintaining a natural sound.
Main Features
Three legendary incarnations, three dynamic responses
The collection offers three sought-after versions of the Teletronix processor, each with its own characteristics. As with the hardware, these variations affect attack and release times, "knee" feel, headroom margin, distortion, as well as program and frequency dependence. The result: you choose not only a compressor but also a signature and a response suited to your playing and style.
LA-2A Silver and LA-2A Gray: two classics for sculpting the mix
The LA-2A Silver (inspired by a late 1960s version with brushed aluminum panel and T4B gain reduction module) is presented as the most flexible of the three. Its faster time constants make it relevant for a wide range of content, including punchier sources rich in transients.
The LA-2A Gray (mid-1960s version) maintains a more "medium" time constant, practical for compression that is both obvious and smooth, with a natural balance between control and musicality. It is an excellent choice when you want stable leveling without overly speeding up attack response.
LA-2: the rare and "mellow" character for legato tempos
The LA-2 is described as a very rare early 1960s unit, predating the LA-2A. It is the slowest version in the collection, designed for more flowing behavior. Its appeal also lies in a "mellowed" sound attributed to the aging of the luminescent panel inside the T4 module. On vocals and legato phrases, it can provide particularly refined transparency and ambiance.
Studio workflow: from tracking to mixing, with engineer presets
This collection is designed to integrate easily into a modern workflow, both in tracking and mixing. You can record through a Teletronix LA-2A or LA-2 in real time with Apollo interfaces, delivering dynamic control inspired by professional studios right from the source.
To speed up your process, you have access to presets from LA-2A users including Ross Hogarth, Darrell Thorp, and Vance Powell, allowing you to quickly achieve optical textures suited to vocals, bass, drums, and other sources.

Questions frequently asked
Is the UAD Teletronix LA-2A Leveler Collection compatible with Mac and Windows?
The collection works on macOS Catalina 10.15 through Sonoma 14, as well as on systems equipped with Intel, AMD, or Apple silicon processors. VST-2, VST-3, AU, and AAX formats are available on Mac; Windows supports VST-2, VST-3, and AAX.
What is the difference between the LA-2A Silver, Gray, and LA-2?
The LA-2A Silver, inspired by a late 1960s unit with a brushed aluminum panel and T4B cell, has the fastest response. The mid-1960s LA-2A Gray features a medium time constant. The early 1960s LA-2 is the slowest and develops a mellow character due to the aging of its T4 luminescent panel.
Is this compressor suitable for recording with an Apollo interface?
It is possible to record in real time through the LA-2A or LA-2 emulations with Apollo interfaces, allowing dynamic control to be applied during tracking.
Which model should be chosen for vocals or bass?
For stable leveling on vocals or bass, the LA-2A Gray provides a smooth response thanks to its medium time constant. For legato vocal phrasing, the slower LA-2 is recommended. The LA-2A Silver may be suitable when a faster response is desired.
Are presets included in the collection?
Presets designed by Ross Hogarth, Darrell Thorp, and Vance Powell are provided for sources such as vocals, bass, and drums.
