Vandoren: The Street Lepic Standard, From Mouthpiece to Reed

Located at 56 rue Lepic, Vandoren has established itself as a global reference thanks to the consistent manufacturing of its reeds and the precision crafting of its mouthpieces. The V5 series is historically associated with a pursuit of stability, sound centering, and control. The V5 Jazz variant follows the same philosophy, featuring wider tip openings to offer more body and projection, without compromising Vandoren's identity: a clear sound, a crisp attack, and consistent response.

For Which Musician and Styles?

This mouthpiece for alto saxophone targets musicians seeking a reliable tool to build (or refine) their sonic personality in jazz : swing, bebop, funk, big band, or contemporary music where the alto must remain present in the mix. It is particularly suitable for intermediate to advanced levels who want to exploit dynamics (from pianissimo to fortissimo) with good pitch stability. While the V5 family is appreciated by classical saxophonists for its rigor, this "Jazz" version allows for a more open and expressive playing style, while maintaining a solid foundation of control.

Sound and Design

Carved from quality ebonite (a material derived from vulcanized natural rubber), this mouthpiece offers a pleasant feel and a stable playing sensation. Its sound balance relies on several key elements: the tip opening (the gap between the tip of the mouthpiece and the reed) influences flexibility and the amount of air required; the chamber and bore contribute to color and projection; while the table (the internal area guiding the air) affects attack and brightness. Here, the V5 signature is recognized by a flat table and a small, round bore : resulting in precise response, clear emission, and good homogeneity across registers, with a sound that can gain in fullness thanks to the "Jazz" orientation and its opening.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

Since this mouthpiece is delivered without ligature or mouthpiece cap, plan for a ligature for alto saxophone mouthpiece as well as an alto-sized mouthpiece cap to protect the table and tip during transport. A selection of reeds suited to your approach (quick response for jazz, more resistance for a centered sound) will also help you find your ideal balance.
