What is Waldorf Largo 2 For?

Largo 2 is a software synthesizer tailored for modern production: wavetable sound design, virtual analog synthesis, evolving textures, punchy basses, sharp leads, deep pads, and vocal effects. Thanks to its layers, multiple filters, and fast modulations (up to audio rate), it fits perfectly into electronic, techno, ambient, pop, cinematic music sessions as well as workflows focused on experimentation and sound design.

Designed as a virtual instrument with Waldorf character, it is easily controlled within your DAW via host automation and MIDI assignment, while remaining a highly creative playground to sculpt a timbre from A to Z, start from a preset, or build a coherent sound bank for a project.

Main Features

Redesigned interface and continuity with your sounds

Largo 2 has been redesigned to meet current standards: the interface is scalable, more pleasant on high-resolution screens, and the software retains a key point for long-time users: compatibility with existing libraries and sound sets, as well as with Largo 1 patches. This allows you to modernize your setup without starting from scratch, while enjoying a smoother daily workflow.

Oscillators and wavetables: the heart of the Waldorf character

Each voice features 3 oscillators with generous behavior, including 2 wavetable oscillators capable of combining wavetable synthesis and waveform (VA) synthesis. You have access to 68 Waldorf wavetables inspired by legendary machines, ideal for creating rich harmonic movements, metallic attacks, expressive digital timbres, or constantly evolving pads. The engine also offers essential tools to thicken or harden a sound: sub oscillators, noise generator, oscillator FM, hard sync, and ring modulation.

Advanced filters: from classic modeling to vocal formants

Largo 2 includes 2 multimode digital filters per voice, with 12/24 dB slopes and LP, BP, HP, and Notch modes. To broaden the palette, you also benefit from comb filters and especially 3 types of formant filters capable of mimicking the frequency response of the vocal tract. By adjusting the cutoff, you can morph between vowels a-e-i-o-u and achieve choral textures, "talking synth" movements, or highly musical vocal modulations. Filter routing can be done in series or parallel, and filter FM opens the door to incisive, percussive, or downright experimental timbres.

Modulation and movement: matrix, envelopes, LFOs, and modifiers

To transform a good sound into a living one, Largo 2 relies on an extremely deep modulation section. You have 4 ultrafast envelopes with selectable types and various loop modes, as well as 3 fast LFOs synchronizable to MIDI Clock, with retrigger and adjustable start phase. The third LFO offers a drawable shape via a 16-step editor, perfect for rhythmic tremolos, precisely grooved filter sweeps, or atypical modulation sequences.

The mod matrix (16 slots) allows stacking routings, reusing the same sources/destinations multiple times, and reaching speeds "into audio rate" for very advanced timbral effects. Going further, Largo 2 also includes complex modifiers and mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, OR, XOR, AND, Min, Max) to combine several sources and build truly custom modulations.

Per-layer effects and production ready

Each layer has 2 effect slots: reverb, delay, chorus, phaser, flanger, and drive. The high-quality chorus (with multi-stage variants) allows creating wide pads and enveloping "string machine" textures. An EQ and a bass boost mode facilitate integration into the mix, whether you seek solid lows, a clearer presence, or cleaner spatialization.

Arpeggiator, multi-parts, and DAW control

The flexible 16-step arpeggiator goes beyond classic patterns: you can create your own motifs to drive bass lines, melodic sequences, or ostinatos. On the performance side, Largo 2 offers up to 4 parts, Mono, Legato, and Unison modes, as well as polyphony up to 256 voices depending on your system. Host automation covers almost all parameters, and assignment via MIDI controllers allows maintaining expressive play both in the studio and on stage.

Powerful sound browser and bank organization

The workflow is enhanced by an efficient soundbrowser: drag-and-drop between the File Browser and Program Manager to load, save, reorganize, copy/paste, manage your banks and categories. You save time when preparing a session, a live set, or a bank dedicated to an album, while keeping quick access to your favorite timbres.
