An "ambient" reverb that has become a classic in the Walrus Audio lineup
The Descent follows the grand tradition of creative reverbs: deep hall, reverse with inverted attacks reminiscent of shoegaze, and shimmer that layers octave harmonics to create an almost synth-like halo. The idea is simple: to transform a reverb into a true arranging instrument, capable of filling space without drowning the attack.
Within the Walrus Audio universe, the Descent marked a turning point by popularizing a very "soundscape" approach (with presets and expression control) in a robust pedalboard format. Note: this model is discontinued, making it a reliable choice for those who love pedals with strong personality.
Who is it for, which styles, and in what contexts?
The Walrus Audio Descent targets guitarists (and bassists) who want to go beyond basic reverb: ambient pads, atmospheric intros, cinematic themes, floating leads, or chords that gain a choral dimension thanks to the octaves. It excels in post-rock, indie, alternative, worship, dream-pop, ambient, but remains perfectly usable in rock when the Wet Mix is finely dialed.
In the studio, it serves both to instantly add depth and to create additional layers without re-recording. Live, its 3 presets and stereo output make it very effective on a pedalboard dedicated to atmospheres, placed at the end of the chain (or in an effects loop if your amp has a very distinct character).
Features and controls: a deeply "sculptable" reverb
The Descent offers 8 controls to precisely shape your space. Reverb parameters adapt depending on the mode: in Hall, you adjust a natural depth ranging from a short room to an infinite hall; in Reverse, the swell sensation strongly depends on the interaction between pre-delay and reverb length; in Shimmer, the reverb becomes a harmonic playground where the upper octave can shine as an additional layer.
The octave section is particularly musical: you control the amount of -1 octave (low) and +1 octave (airy) sent into the reverb, while maintaining control over the Dry Signal (what is sent to the reverb) and the Wet Mix (overall dry/wet balance at output). The result: you can go from a simple discreet "halo" to an orchestral pad.
On the control side, the Descent features a very creative expression input: you set a "heel" position and a "toe" position by adjusting the knobs, then sweep between them with your foot for smooth transitions (mix, duration, tone, octave amount, etc.). The remote/fav input also allows you to relocate foot controls via an external switch, handy if the pedal is placed in the second row of your pedalboard.
Finally, the Descent offers 3 presets: save an always-on Hall, a Reverse for intros, and a Shimmer for choruses, then recall them instantly.
Sound
The Descent is characterized by a rich and immersive reverb with a very pronounced sense of depth. In Hall mode, you easily get a dense and enveloping reverb tail, ideal for thickening a clean tone without losing clarity. The Reverse mode brings that "suction/swell" feel that responds very well to phrasing and sustained notes, perfect for expressive melodic lines.
The Shimmer is the pedal's creative heart: the upper octave adds an almost choral brightness, while the lower octave provides dramatic grounding (excellent for giving a cinematic dimension to arpeggios). This pedal is notably favored by musicians known for their textures and spaces, such as Misha Mansoor, Julien Baker, Aaron Dessner, and Anthony Gonzalez.

Questions frequently asked
What reverb modes does the Walrus Audio Descent offer?
The three modes Hall, Reverse, and Shimmer cover deep ambiances, reverse attacks, and octave-enriched layers. The Shimmer mode allows separate control of the signals at -1 octave and +1 octave fed into the reverb.
Can the Descent store settings?
With its 3 presets, this pedal allows saving and instantly recalling three reverb configurations.
How to connect the Descent in stereo?
The Left Out output supports mono use, while the Right Out output completes the stereo configuration via two 6.35 mm jacks. Stereo input requires internal DIP switch configuration. A 6.35 mm TRS splitter cable is also needed.
Can the reverb be controlled with an expression pedal?
The 6.35 mm expression input allows defining heel and toe positions based on the potentiometer settings. Transitions can thus gradually affect the mix, decay time, or octave amount.
Is the Walrus Audio Descent still in production?
This model has been discontinued and comes in a pedal format measuring 14.3 x 11.7 x 4.0 cm, powered by mains supply.
