The Walrus Audio Polychrome targets guitarists (and bassists) who want an expressive and easy-to-integrate modulation pedal without becoming overwhelming. In funk and pop, it adds fine rhythmic animation on muted strums or arpeggios. In rock and indie, it thickens a crunch with broad, organic movement. In metal, the flanger can become a formidable contrast tool on riffs or leads, especially with feedback and a more pronounced speed.

In the studio, the Polychrome excels at "placing" a guitar in the sound field: a slight Depth, a slow Rate, and moderate D-F-V are enough to add dimension without muddying the attack. On stage, the Momentary Bypass function allows you to add the effect only on a passage (break, phrase ending, transition), with clean triggering thanks to the Soft-Switch relay.

Settings, Modes, and Controls: A Pedal Designed to Sculpt Movement

The Polychrome offers a comprehensive control section, designed to quickly reach the right setting while providing great finesse. The Rate knob controls the LFO speed over a very wide range, from 0.1 Hz (very slow modulation, almost "drift") up to 8 Hz (fast and nervous vibrations). A Rate LED gives you an immediate visual reference of the speed, useful for syncing a movement to a tempo or anticipating the modulation before engaging the effect.

Depth determines the modulation intensity: low adds a lively and subtle brightness; higher settings deepen and accentuate the sweep for more dramatic textures. Sweep acts as a "positioning" of the flanger in the spectrum: it lets you move from a "Deep-Flange" frequency range (wider, deeper) to more traditional and centered tones. Finally, Feedback controls the signal return into the circuit, shifting from a subtle flanger to more intense effects with greater resonance and character.

Two selectors complete the palette: Voice (two selectable flanger types: Traditional or Complex & Notched ) and Shape (three selectable LFO waveforms: sine, triangle, or random ). The notched mode is particularly interesting for achieving a more textured, "cut" flanger, ideal when you want an audible effect without boosting the low end.

The true signature is the D-F-V control: it manages the ratio between Dry, Flange, and Vibrato. At one end, you remain completely dry; in the center, you get a well-balanced classic flanger; at the other end, you switch to a more pronounced pitch vibrato. Result: you can precisely dose the effect's presence or transform the Polychrome into a very musical vibrato tool without losing control of your attack.

The Sound

The Polychrome delivers a warm and organic flanger character, with dynamics highly responsive to playing: the harder you play, the more the movement reveals itself; the lighter you play, the more the effect can stay in the background. With moderate settings (slow Rate, moderate Depth, low Feedback), it adds a sense of width and movement ideal for enriching open chords, slightly compressed cleans, or soft crunches. Increasing Feedback and choosing a sharper waveform (triangle) or a more unpredictable one (random) yields more expressive textures, perfect for transitions, dreamy intros, or leads that need to "take off."

Thanks to the D-F-V, the Polychrome stands out for its ability to remain controllable : you can keep your guitar's fundamental tone clear or, conversely, emphasize oscillation and the sensation of rotation, up to sounds close to pitch vibrato. It's a pedal that can be both refined and elegant and spectacular, depending on the role you want it to play in your sound.
