What is Waves Abbey Road Studio 3 for?

Waves Abbey Road Studio 3 is a headphone monitoring plugin designed to reproduce the speaker listening experience of a reference control room. It is aimed at producers, mixers, sound engineers, and content creators who need to work on headphones (home studio, on the go, late sessions) while maintaining credible mixing decisions on stereo, depth, reverb, and low-end energy. The goal is simple: to achieve mixes that translate better on other systems (studio monitors, car, club, TV) by reducing the typical pitfalls of headphone mixing.

Main Features

A legendary control room in your ears

Studio 3 is Abbey Road's main mixing room, designed by acoustic experts to offer a precise and controlled listening environment. The plugin reproduces the characteristics of this room through advanced 3D acoustic modeling: speaker placement, room interactions, early reflections, and spatial perception. The result: on headphones, you get a more "speaker-like" sensation, with a more natural image and less "in-head" sound.

Waves Nx Technology: binaural, crosstalk, and psychoacoustic cues

The Waves Nx engine relies on key elements of perception (crosstalk between channels, interaural time delays ITD, interaural level differences ILD, filters, and early reflections) to recreate the spatial listening experience. This is combined with precise measurements taken in the physical Abbey Road Studio 3 control room for a coherent and practical simulation usable daily, both for mixing and quality control before export.

Headphone correction for a more neutral listening

Every headphone colors the sound: bass bumps, mid dips, harsh highs... which often leads to risky compensations (too much sub, overly forward vocals, excessive reverb). Abbey Road Studio 3 includes EQ correction curves for over 270 models to flatten the response and provide a more reliable foundation. This way, you maintain a more consistent reference whether using a closed-back studio headphone for recording or an open-back model for mixing.

Three pairs of monitors to multiply references

Just like in a real mixing session, you can check your work on three listening systems inspired by the room's custom monitors: near-field for detailed analysis (balance, transients, sibilance), mid-field for a more "hi-fi" and musical listening, and far-field to assess overall impact, power sensation, and a more "large system" sound.

Ambiance settings and morphological calibration

The plugin allows you to keep the precise acoustics of Studio 3 or adjust the ambiance toward a slightly drier or wetter sound, useful for controlling reverb amount and mix clarity. To personalize the 3D effect according to your morphology, you can also enter your head measurements in the calibration section: a simple step that can improve center stability (kick, bass, vocals) and stereo image perception.

Head tracking: a more natural immersion

In a control room, the sound changes as you turn your head. Abbey Road Studio 3 can reproduce this effect via motion tracking: either with the computer's camera or the dedicated Nx Head Tracker device. This dynamic behavior helps you better "escape" the headphones, stabilize the stereo image, and enhance the speaker listening sensation, especially useful during long sessions.

5.1 / 7.1 surround monitoring on stereo headphones

Beyond stereo, Abbey Road Studio 3 includes components to work in 5.1 and 7.1. The binaural spatial modeling allows evaluation of placement, depth, and balance of a surround mix even with stereo headphones, to prepare immersive deliverables or check a post-production session without access to a multichannel room.
